This is not something we make often, because it takes around 10 years, but last week we made a healthy plum crumble pie with oat crust. It’s a great meal prep breakfast, so the time will not be wasted. Plus this plum recipe is vegan, flourless, sugar-free and despite that description: satisfying. So we want to share…

…the recipe, we mean, Joey Gaical doesn’t share food!!!!

This pie is not fast, but simple to make.

The crust is made with oats, dates, coconut oil and walnuts. The filling, believe it or not, is just fresh plums that we sautéed with coconut oil. And the crumble is the same as the crust.

Making this healthier plum crumble pie takes around 45 minutes, so longer than most of our recipes, but we wouldn’t say it’s hard to make. There are not many things you can mess up here.

Why Plum Crumble Pie? Antioxidants, Guys.

Well, first of all, plums are cheap, in season right now and we had lots of them.

Also one of the things we know in life is that plums are among the antioxidant richest foods in the world. If you don’t believe us, read more here.

Our dad has been telling us stories about how healthy plums are since we were a child. One time, he told us the story of how some friend of our grandfather beat colon cancer by eating a ton of plums. Now, we are not sure this is true, but we remember it 20 years later and it’s one of those stories you hear and you just choose to believe is true.

Of course, eating plums raw is better than eating them baked in a pie, but while you’re making that pie, you’ll for sure eat one or two fresh fruits as well. Believe us. And also, some of the health benefits of the plums will still be in that pie.

Also, and we think that’s three: this is a satisfying plum crumble pie. It’s not much of a dessert if you have a HUGE sweet tooth, but if you don’t, it will satisfy your sugar cravings.

Also, it’s good for breakfast. The day after “refresh” it in the oven for a minute or two to get that crisp crumbly texture again. The crust does get softer after a while.

Now let’s take a look at how to make it.

How it comes together

Before you actually start with the pie, the first thing you want to do is soak dates for 30 min – we need those for the crust. (Update 2026: But if you don’t have dates, a slightly unhealthier option would be 1 1/2 tbsp maple syrup)

Wash the plums for the filling, remove pits, and chop. Here we used some type of a purple plum (we are not an expert on plums!). Feel free to use any plum you have. In fact, you don’t have plums – this pie would work with any fruit. For example, we have a similar recipe for mini apple crumble pies (they’re here if you want to check them out).

Once you have the fruit ready, sauté it in a pan with coconut oil for 5-10 minutes until soft. You could add cinnamon or vanilla – whatever you choose. We used virgin coconut oil because we LOVE the smell of coconut together with fruit.

And that’s the plum filling. You let it cool off and start making the crust.

For the crust, We didn’t use any flour, but ground oats in our coffee grinder into oat flour.

Next, we pureed the dates and then added everything for the crust into a food processor: oat flour, processed dates, walnuts, cinnamon, coconut oil and some water to bind. Process until you get a crumbly mixture that sticks together.

Separate that dough into 3/4 parts to make the crust and 1/4 to make the topping crumble.

Time to assemble the plum crumble pie. We used a springform for this – you can use any type of baking pan. It is not a huge pie, so use a smaller form. We lined our springform with parchment paper a reliable way we could, because we hate having to wash too much and because it’s a reliable invention in the world.

Next, take the dough you just made, put it in the middle of the form and press, spreading evenly in the form, just like you would with a regular pie or cheesecake.

Once you’re done with that part, add the layer of plums.

Now it’s time for those crumbles! So you take the dough you set aside, form crumbles with your fingers and put on top of the plums. Voila, off to the oven. OMG, we speak French.

In the oven, lower rack and bake for 20-30 minutes or until the crumbles become golden-brown.

That is it.

Not that hard, guys. And much healthier than regular pies.

This is great for meal prep and it’s solid for breakfast or whenever you need something sweet.

Wait a little bit to start eating to not burn your tongue and enjoy with some honey-yogurt mix or coconut whipped cream on top. Or you know, whatever you want.

We hope you enjoy this healthy dessert, don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions!

We originally shared this plum crumble pie recipe in August 2018 and recently updated it with new photos in August 2026. This time, we didn’t have any dates, so we used about 2 tbsp maple syrup or until desired sweetness of the crust. We also ground 1/2 cup of nuts (this time it was pecans) and the oats together in our Nutribullet to make the flour for the recipe. We also added 3 tbsp of coconut oil (not 6) and 2 tbsp of water to make the dough more crumbly. satisfying and an simple way to use up those plums!

Plum crumble pie with oats, healthy

  • Yield: 8
  • Prep: 30 minutes
  • Cook: 20 minutes
  • Total: 1 hour 35 minutes

Ingredients

Crust

  • 1 1/3 cup oats, ground
  • 6 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 4 Tbsp water
  • 1/3 cup walnuts
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup dates, soaked & blended

Filling

  • 1 1/2 cup chopped plums
  • 1 tsp coconut oil

Method

  1. If you haven't yet - soak the dates for 20-30 minutes while you're making the filling.
  2. Making the filling Wash, remove pits and chop the plums. In a pan add about 1 tsp coconut oil and sauté the plums, cover with a lid for 5-10 minutes and cook until soft. Turn off, let cool off.
  3. Making the crust While the plums are cooking grind the oats into flour and start making the crust in your food processor. Add all ingredients, including soaked and blended dates and process until you get a firm dough that is crumbly, but sticks together. Set 1/4 of the dough aside for the crumble on top.
  4. Assemble Line a small to medium baking tray (we recommend a springform pan) with parchment paper and start pressing the crust mixture spreading it evenly. We used our hands for this, but you can also use the bottom of a glass or any other tool you have. On top of the crust spread the plum filling. Then form the crumbles using the dough you set aside and put on top of the plum filling.
  5. Baking In the lower rack of the oven place the spring form and bake at 350 F/ 180 C. The pie is done when the crumble turns golden brown.
  6. Take out, let the plum crumble pie cool off, release from the springform pan and slice into 8 pieces.
  7. Enjoy like this or with a topping of your choice - whipped coconut cream or a little bit of naturally sweetened yogurt would go well!
