Not gonna lie, this healthy version of a classic apple pie is pretty much the same as our mini pies from a few years ago, but it looks like their parent. Making this flourless healthy apple crumble pie with its notable oatmeal crust and sugar-free apple filling from scratch might look like a huge undertaking, but it’s actually simple. And the result is – a reliable autumn treat, but good for you!

We used no flour, but oats to prepare the crust and the streusel on top and apples, cinnamon and coconut oil for the filling of the pie. So, if you’re counting, we’re talking a gluten-free, flourless and refined-sugar free baking recipe with apples and it tastes notable. It’s great for holidays, special occasions or whenever you’re in the mood for a fall dessert or even breakfast. It’s basically apple pie that you’ll want to eat every day (well if you choose the right apples – more on that later)!

Healthy Home-cooked Apple Crumble Pie

So this healthy apple crumble pie is generally flourless and vegan (use maple syrup, not honey!) as it’s made with oats and there are no eggs or butter or dairy or meat in this recipe. Shocking we know! Apple pie without meat? Are you kidding us? It will taste like nothing.

And you can use gluten-free oats to make it gluten-free, if you need to be eating this way.

Now, we topped ours with ice cream, because we were going through a phase when ice cream became one of our biggest cravings. Even though we hadn’t broken up with anyone and wasn’t starring in a romantic “comedy” from the 90’s, 2000’s or 2010’s. We even tried “healthy” ice cream and it wasn’t bad, but it’s just not the same.

Pick The Right Apples!

Okay, a bit of a warning: taste your apples before you make this. We made this healthy pie recently after we went apple picking with our sister and her family. All we can say: FREE APPLES. Who knew, they grow on trees! Surprise!!! We think we saved like 10 bucks from picking this many apples.

It was a fun day, we also bounded with some sheep, we almost climbed trees and some of us stepped into sheep shit and things got messy. Help, it’s in our hair…

Even our little nephew got excited because, free apples. He kept eating them and repeating “Apple. Pieeee.” He’s two and cute.

Well, as cute as he might be, he didn’t get to eat the apple pie we made with those apples, because we don’t share food and his cuteness means nothing to us. We're kidding, sometimes we'd share a little bit of our food with a dog or a cat. When we don’t like it a lot, of course. We're not stupid.

The truth is those apples were sour.

When those apples met the lemons and limes on the kitchen counter, they just pointed and laughed for hours. As in, hydrochloric acid, which has a pH of 3 of is nothing to those apples…Such a loser, that HCl.

Still, the good eater that we are, we ate that pie with quite a lot of ice cream. Those were some fun sour mornings, we're telling you. Baking a sour apple pie can make you quite an outsider and lonely. Nobody wants to touch that thing and listen to your constant complaints of how sour it is. Therefore, choose wisely.

And if you’re picking your own apples thinking you’re saving money and can maybe sell those apples or use them in like, we don’t know – an apple pie with oatmeal crust, because healthy – think again. Sometimes you’ll have to pay with your taste buds and lots of saliva to neutralize that acidic pH.

Okay, but if you make this healthy apple crumble pie with normal, sweet satisfying apples that don’t taste like the world is about to end, you’ll be happy. And you’ll have a healthy apple pie for dessert. Apple. Pieeee.

Update 2025: 50 cents for apples????? hahahahaha. Also, this time we chose sweet apples, but the night before we made the recipe again, we had cut some onions on the cutting board that we used to chop apples. So we got an onion-infused apple pie. Still ate it. Apples – Good. Oat Crumble Crust – GOOOOD. Onion smell – GOOD. We feel like Joey from Friends, but younger and female. We also added ground the oats with some nuts to make the crust – we find it even more satisfying! Just add 1:2 nuts to oats (pecans and walnuts are great) and use half the amount of coconut oil.

How it comes together

Preheat your oven! Then start making a crumbly crust in your food processor using ground oats, melted coconut oil and some water. You can also add in some nuts, but if you’re allergic to nuts or want to share this with a young child – leave out the nuts and use oats only.

Spread about 2/3 of this “dough” in a spring form using your hands. Keep the rest of the dough for the crumbly topping.

Peel and chop the apples, then saute them in a pan with some coconut oil and cinnamon. Make sure to taste the apples before adding on top of the crust.

Spread the apples over the oatmeal crust and top with the rest of the dough, making crumbles with your hands. Optionally, you can add walnuts or pecans here.

Bake at 180C/350F for about 30 minutes, but make sure to be checking after 20 minutes, because ovens are different! (this is important when using honey for the crust)

Let the pie cool off to not burn your tongue, top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!
