This watermelon smoothie with strawberries is a refreshing and simple summer drink that’s healthy and simple. You only need three ingredients (water is the 3rd) and a blender!
Okay, so we're officially melting and it’s not pretty.
It’s summer and watermelon is seducing us everywhere. Isn’t it the most satisfying thing you can eat, ever?
Like, it’s the solid food:
- It’s big
- It has a lot of water in it
- Smells and tastes fresh
- DELICIOUS.
Watermelon Benefits
Watermelon is also healthy. Now, if you have pre-diabetes or diabetes, watermelon might send your blood glucose to the moon and back. But it does so, by also supplying antioxidants like beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamin C and fiber. Actually, watermelon is the food with the highest bioavailable lycopene concentrations, more than tomatoes.
A study comparing cookies to watermelon as a snack also found out that with the same calories, cookies actually lead to higher blood glucose levels than watermelon after an hour. After 4 weeks, the watermelon group also had lowered blood pressure, triglycerides and lost weight compared to baseline. Cookies – increased all of those. So if the choice is cookies or watermelon, when in season – watermelon!
Watermelon is also a source of L-citrulline. Which is the precursor of the amino acid L-arginine that your body can use to make nitric oxide, which in turn can dilate blood vessels and lower blood pressure. This L-arginine was also shown to be lower in patients with ulcerative colitis, so watermelon might be a helper here. This same research showed that watermelon consumption also lowered several markers of chronic inflammation like CRP.
You Can Eat The Whole Fruit
Now, all of this is great, but what we actually found out last year fascinated us: You can eat the whole fruit.
The seeds, the rind, the peel, even the leaves. In fact, these parts of the plant can be used in different preparations and extracts to improve antioxidant status. They’re rich in protein, fiber, magnesium, iron and zinc.
Basically, Watermelon Is Solid
Usually, we don’t mess with watermelon. It’s probably the only thing in the world that’s solid just the way it is. Well, except for cats.

You know Bruno Mars was actually talking to a watermelon in that song, right?
We know there are tons of salads and recipes with watermelon out there, but it just doesn’t get any better than the fruit itself.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
If you have a watermelon, don’t make a salad with it.
Or watermelon pizza – they’re everywhere and we just saw a watermelon pizza with bananas the other day.

….aaaand so we're a hypocrite. Or a hypochondriac?
Or was it Hippocrates?
The guy who said something about food and thy and medicine. We're that guy. Well girl.
Definitely not the one who complains about people doing weird stuff and then does the same thing.
Okay. So we made a smoothie with watermelon and strawberries.
It’s fresh and those are two of our FAVORITE fruits ever.
It’s sweet and one of the easiest, best things you can make to cool off this summer.
And here’s how to make it.

- Yield: 2-3
- Prep: 5 minutes
- Total: 5 minutes
Ingredients
- 2 cups chopped watermelon
- 1 cup frozen strawberries
- 1/2 cup water (optional)
- ice (optional)
Method
- Add strawberries, watermelon and water to a blender. Make sure that watermelon and water are the ones in touch with the blades to assist blending - the frozen berries might be too much. For example, we have a Nutribullet, so we first add the berries, then the watermelon, then the water.
- Blend all ingredients until smooth and serve immediately! Enjoy 🙂
Notes
- Add ice cubes if you aren't using frozen strawberries
- Add water/ fluid of your choice to adjust consistency
- For more slushy-like texture, freeze watermelon before blending
