In the dynamic realm of social media, authenticity is paramount. As content creators, we receive countless proposals daily from brands eager for promotion. If we were to accept every offer, our platforms would quickly become a disingenuous billboard, eroding the trust we’ve painstakingly built with our community. At Fit Foodie Finds, our integrity is everything. We meticulously select partners whose values align seamlessly with our own – brands we genuinely believe in, from their superior products to their core mission statements. This rigorous vetting process is precisely why we are so incredibly excited to embark on a deeper collaboration with Organic Valley over the coming months. Simply put, their dedication to ethical practices, sustainable farming, and superior products is truly inspiring, making them an ideal and valued partner.
Who is Organic Valley? More Than Just Organic Dairy
Organic Valley stands apart in the food industry as a groundbreaking farmer-owned cooperative. This unique structure means that the business isn’t dictated by corporate shareholders or external investors but is instead collectively owned and governed by the very farmers who dedicate their lives to producing the dairy. It’s a testament to their vision that this collaborative model, though unconventional, has thrived for decades, demonstrating a powerful and successful alternative to conventional industrial agriculture. Their overarching mission extends far beyond simply producing high-quality organic dairy; it’s a holistic commitment to environmental sustainability, animal welfare, human health, and strengthening rural communities.
Organic Valley is synonymous with dairy that is certified organic and 100% grass-fed. This guarantees products free from toxic pesticides, harmful GMOs, artificial hormones, and unnecessary antibiotics. But their dedication doesn’t stop there. They champion a philosophy that redefines modern farming, focusing on practices that benefit everyone:
- Supporting Small, Family-Owned Farms: Organic Valley is built on the foundation of supporting hundreds of small-scale, family-owned farms across the country. They believe in the power of these operations, ensuring that dairy production sustains individual families and their multi-generational legacies, rather than consolidating into massive, often impersonal, industrial complexes. This preserves rural economies and traditional farming knowledge.
- A Revolutionary Regional Model: Organic Valley employs a smart, highly efficient regional approach to distribution. Milk is produced, bottled, and distributed within the same geographical region where it’s farmed. This drastically reduces the “food miles” from farm to table, ensuring unparalleled freshness for consumers, minimizing environmental impact by cutting transportation costs and emissions, and vigorously supporting local economies by keeping money circulating within communities. This commitment to local resilience and efficiency is something we wholeheartedly endorse.
- Unwavering Animal Welfare: The well-being and natural behaviors of their animals are a top priority. Organic Valley cows are raised with dignity, enjoying open pastures where they can graze freely for much of the year and express natural behaviors. Their diet consists exclusively of grass, a natural and healthy feed, which contributes not only to the cows’ overall health and happiness but also to the superior nutritional quality of the milk they produce.
- Commitment to Human Health: Organic Valley deeply cares about the food we consume and its impact on our bodies. They strive to provide nutrient-dense, high-quality organic food at a fair price, making healthy choices accessible to more families and supporting a healthier society. Their products offer peace of mind, knowing you’re consuming food produced without harmful synthetic chemicals.
- Nutrient-Rich Products: Their milk is not just organic; it’s also naturally richer in vital nutrients like Omega-3 fatty acids and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) due to their grass-fed diet. Omega-3s are essential healthy fats crucial for brain development, heart health, and reducing inflammation, while CLA is a powerful fatty acid known for its immune system-boosting and potential anti-cancer properties.
This extensive list merely scratches the surface of Organic Valley’s profound impact. We are incredibly proud to partner with a brand that is genuinely making a positive difference, not only on a national scale but also in the lives of individual farming families and the health of our planet.
A Day on an Organic Valley Farm: The Gretebecks’ Inspiring Story

Last week, Team Fit Foodie was granted an extraordinary opportunity to experience firsthand what “life on an Organic Valley Farm” truly entails. We rolled up our sleeves, donned our boots, and immersed ourselves in the daily rhythm of The Gretebecks’ Organic Valley Farm in Cashton, WI – an experience that left an indelible mark on all of us. The overwhelming impression we took away can be summed up in one word: happiness. The land radiated health and vitality, the animals exuded contentment, and the farmers themselves, Tucker and Becky Gretebeck, were a beacon of joy, passion, and unwavering dedication.
Stepping onto the Gretebeck farm was a revelation, a world apart from the often-disturbing images portrayed in documentaries about conventional, factory-style dairy farming. This farm operates precisely as nature intended and how responsible, ethical agriculture should be conducted. We witnessed expansive, open pastures teeming with not just hundreds of contented cows, but a diverse array of happy farm animals – goats, pigs, horses, and even bunnies – all living in harmony within a natural ecosystem. There was a palpable absence of harsh chemicals, both in the fields and in the overall environment – a stark and refreshing contrast to conventional practices. Meeting Tucker and Becky, the genuine people behind this thriving farm, offered invaluable insight into the daily dedication, the unique challenges, and the immense rewards that define a farmer’s life. It truly underscored the humanity, hard work, and deep commitment at the heart of organic farming.
Tucker and Becky Gretebeck epitomize the spirit of hardworking, knowledgeable, and genuinely fun individuals. Their connection to their farm and every single animal is profound; they know every detail, down to the names of hundreds of their farm residents. As fourth or fifth-generation farmers, their family has nurtured this organic land for an astonishing five generations – a legacy that speaks volumes about their unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and preserving the land for future generations. Both spoke with immense passion about their lifestyle, the welfare of their beloved cows, and the incredibly positive impact that partnering with Organic Valley has had on their family’s livelihood and their ability to continue farming ethically, upholding the values passed down through generations.
The Gretebeck family manages a total herd of approximately 125 cows, with around 50 of these residing directly on Tucker and Becky’s personal farm. These cows enjoy the freedom of grazing in lush pastures throughout the day, being milked twice daily in a routine that prioritizes their comfort. Despite Becky also holding a demanding full-time job off the farm, and with their children only assisting when not in school, they manage this extensive operation primarily as a family unit. This means the dedicated care for all their animals – cows, goats, pigs, bunnies, horses, and more – falls squarely on their shoulders, requiring relentless effort and tireless commitment. It’s not merely a job; it’s a way of life, an all-encompassing commitment that defines their identity. And yes, as a testament to their personal connection and deep respect, every single animal on their farm has a name – it truly is “holy cow” in the best possible sense!

While Tucker and Becky certainly made farm life appear idyllic and fulfilling, they were also remarkably candid about the immense hard work and unwavering dedication it demands. Being a farmer isn’t a 9-to-5 job; it’s a 24/7, 365-day-a-year commitment that requires constant vigilance and responsiveness. There’s no packing up for a spontaneous vacation or casually taking a day off when your livelihood and the welfare of your animals depend entirely on your constant presence and care. It’s a demanding but incredibly rewarding lifestyle, driven by a deep love for the land, its inhabitants, and the vital role they play in providing wholesome food to communities.
Fascinating Facts from the Farm: What We Learned About Organic Dairy Farming
Our day with Tucker and Becky was packed with valuable insights and fascinating details about the intricacies and thoughtful practices involved in organic dairy farming. Here are some of the engaging facts and lessons we learned directly from them:
- Diverse Pasture Management for Optimal Nutrition: The Gretebecks strategically plant three distinct types of grass in their pastures. This isn’t arbitrary; it’s a sophisticated method designed to provide a wide spectrum of essential nutrients to their cows, ensuring a balanced and rich diet. Furthermore, this diversity acts as an ingenious safeguard: if adverse weather conditions or other environmental factors negatively impact one type of grass, the cows still have abundant, healthy forage available, preventing a shortage of feed and maintaining consistent nutrition.
- Rotational Grazing for Sustainable Land Use: Their pastures are intelligently divided into various sections, facilitating a carefully planned rotational grazing pattern. This practice is absolutely crucial for sustainable land management and soil health. By regularly rotating the herd through different sections, each segment of the pasture gets ample time to rest and regenerate. This allows the grasses to recover fully, deepen their root systems, and maintain their vitality, which prevents overgrazing, promotes biodiversity, and enhances soil fertility.
- The Herd’s Natural Leader: In every cow herd, there exists a natural social hierarchy, often led by a designated “lead cow.” This individual is typically the most intelligent, observant, and dominant of the group, instinctively guiding the herd through the pastures. Becky or Tucker only needs to call in the lead cow for milking, and the rest of the herd dutifully follows, demonstrating the innate social structure and intelligence within the bovine community and making daily routines more efficient and stress-free.
- The Marvel of Bovine Digestion: Cows possess a unique and highly efficient digestive system, featuring a four-chamber stomach. This specialized anatomy is perfectly adapted for breaking down tough plant matter, such as grass and forage, that humans cannot digest. Each chamber plays a vital role in fermenting and extracting nutrients from fibrous feed, making them incredibly efficient “upcyclers” – transforming simple grass into nutrient-rich milk and, ultimately, wholesome food for us.
- Understanding Heifers in Dairy Farming: In dairy farming terminology, a “heifer” refers specifically to a young female cow that has not yet calved. Critically, a heifer has also not yet begun to produce milk. This distinction is incredibly important for farmers in managing their herd’s growth, breeding cycles, and future production capacities, ensuring a continuous supply of healthy milk producers for years to come.
