Embracing Fitness on Vacation: My Cruise Experience

It’s been almost three weeks since I returned from an unforgettable cruise, and I’m still dreaming of the open seas! It took a good four days for my body to fully readjust to solid ground, the gentle rocking sensation lingering as a fond memory of the ship’s rhythm. My partner, Blake, experienced the very same land-sickness, a testament to how deeply we immersed ourselves in the cruise life!

I was thrilled to hear from so many of you, my incredible FFF readers, who also prioritize fitness during your travels. It truly makes a fitness blogger proud! On this particular trip, maintaining my workout schedule was a top priority, and I’m excited to share how I managed to stay active while still enjoying all the luxuries of a vacation. My goal was to complete five workouts over the eight-day journey, and I’m proud to say I crushed it!

My Vacation Workout Schedule: A Blueprint for Active Travel

Here’s a glimpse into how I structured my fitness routine aboard the cruise ship, proving that an active vacation is not only possible but incredibly rewarding:

  • Sunday: REST DAY – Essential for recovery and enjoying the first day at sea.
  • Monday: Dynamic Warm-up & 15-Minute Run + Full Body Weights (a comprehensive session targeting all major muscle groups, similar to a Full Body Toner but with added resistance for enhanced sculpting).
  • Tuesday: Intense Full Body Toner – A high-energy Body Shred Bootcamp session focused on endurance and strength.
  • Wednesday: Scenic 3-Mile Run + 45-minute Power Walk with my wonderful friend, Monique, around the ship’s track.
  • Thursday: REST DAY – Another crucial day for relaxation and exploration.
  • Friday: Body Shred Bootcamp – This exact circuit workout that I’m sharing today! It’s perfect for a quick yet effective session.
  • Saturday: Body Shred Bootcamp – Another invigorating full-body session to cap off the week (details coming soon!).
  • Sunday: REST DAY – A final day to unwind before heading home.

Some of you might think it’s crazy to work out on vacation, but rest assured, I always make sure to carve out plenty of time for pampering and relaxation! A perfect example was our incredible spa day, an experience that truly elevated our cruise. The Princess Regal’s Lotus Spa is simply unparalleled. Imagine this: with around 3,000 passengers aboard (that’s 800 more people than Blake’s entire hometown!), a significant number are undoubtedly seeking some much-needed R&R. Blake and I opted for a blissful couples massage; I indulged in a classic full-body treatment, while Blake chose a deep tissue massage. I admit, I completely drifted off – cue the happy dance!

We were also treated to complimentary day passes to The Sanctuary, arguably the most serene and exclusive area on the entire ship. Oh, how I wish we could have spent every minute there! The Sanctuary is a haven of tranquility, complete with dedicated wait staff, incredibly comfortable reclining chairs, and refreshing citrus-infused water. It’s wonderfully separated from the main hustle and bustle of the boat, offering an unparalleled sense of calm and rejuvenation.

The Ultimate 30-Minute Body Sculpt Circuit Workout

After experiencing both exhilarating workouts and serene relaxation, I’m thrilled to share the second workout from my Body Sculpt Series that I performed on the ship. This circuit is designed to be highly effective, maximizing your results in minimal time. It’s perfect for anyone looking to build strength, improve endurance, and sculpt lean muscle.

Grab some dumbbells and set aside 30 minutes to rock your bod with this body sculpt circuit workout! It's interval based, so get ready to sweat!

Rock Your Bod Circuit (Body Sculpt Series)

This interval-based circuit challenges your strength and stamina. Perform each exercise with precision and control. Once you complete all exercises in a round, take a brief 30-second rest, then move to the next round, decreasing your repetitions or hold time as indicated.

Workout Structure:

Perform each exercise 16 times (or 16 seconds for static holds) with no breaks in between. Once the full circuit (all exercises) is complete, rest for 30 seconds. Then, move into the next round, adjusting reps/hold times as follows: 14, 12, 10, 8, 6. The goal is to progressively challenge your muscles while maintaining good form.

Exercise Breakdown with Form Tips:

1. Clean + Press (Full Body Power)

Targets: Shoulders, glutes, hamstrings, core, quads.

How to: Begin with your feet hip-width distance apart, holding a dumbbell in your right hand. Lower down into a squat, ensuring your chest remains lifted, back straight, and core engaged. Allow the dumbbell to lightly tap the ground between your feet. As you powerfully stand back up, use the momentum to “clean” the dumbbell up to your shoulder (into a goal post position), then immediately perform a one-arm shoulder press, extending your arm fully overhead. Control the movement as you lower the dumbbell back to the starting position for the next squat. Repeat this motion. *Complete 16 repetitions on your right side before switching to 16 repetitions on your left side (or the corresponding rep count for the current round).

Tips: Keep your core tight throughout. The power comes from your legs and glutes as you stand up, not just your arm.

2. Mountain Climbers (Core & Cardio Burn)

Targets: Core, shoulders, hip flexors, cardiovascular system.

How to: Start in a strong plank position. Your shoulders should be stacked directly over your wrists, feet hip-width distance apart, and your spine in one long, neutral line from head to heels. Engage your core strongly. Then, dynamically pull your right knee towards your chest, immediately returning it to the starting position. Without pause, pull your left knee towards your chest. Alternate legs rapidly, mimicking a running motion. The faster you move your legs while maintaining core stability, the more challenging and effective this exercise will be. Keep your hips stable and avoid letting them pike up too high or sag too low.

Tips: Focus on keeping your core engaged to prevent your hips from swaying. Breathe deeply and maintain a steady rhythm.

3. Alternating 1-Arm Row + Push-Up (Upper Body & Core Strength)

Targets: Chest, triceps, shoulders, back (lats, rhomboids), obliques, core.

How to: Begin in a plank position with a dumbbell placed securely in your right hand (or placed on the ground next to your hand for stability if needed). Your shoulders should be stacked over your wrists, feet hip-width apart, and your spine in a long, straight line. Lower down into a controlled push-up, leading with your chest and keeping your neck long and neutral. Once you press back up to plank, perform a one-arm row with your right arm, pulling the dumbbell towards your rib cage, squeezing your shoulder blade. As you lower the dumbbell, smoothly transition into an open side plank, rotating your body and extending your right arm towards the ceiling. Return to the plank position. *For this exercise, perform half the repetitions on the right side and half on the left side within each round. For example, if it’s the 16-rep round, complete 8 repetitions on your right side, then switch the dumbbell to your left hand and perform 8 repetitions on your left side.

Tips: Keep your core incredibly tight during the row and side plank to prevent rotation. Control the descent of the push-up.

4. Static Squat (Lower Body Endurance)

Targets: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, core.

How to: Stand with your feet hip-width distance apart, holding a single dumbbell with both hands at chest height (or a dumbbell in each hand, arms extended). Keeping your chest lifted, shoulders pulled back, and core engaged, lower down into a squat as if sitting back into a chair. Your thighs should ideally be parallel to the floor, or as low as you can comfortably go while maintaining good form. Extend your arms straight out in front of you at shoulder height, holding the dumbbell steady. Hold this static squat position for 16 seconds (or the corresponding hold time for the current round). Focus on deep breathing and maintaining muscle tension throughout the hold.

Tips: Ensure your knees track over your toes and don’t collapse inward. Keep your weight in your heels. Push your knees slightly out to engage your glutes.
