Embracing Vulnerability My Life Transformed Bloodys Bouldering Report

Embracing Vulnerability: A Journey of Growth Through Bouldering and Community

Vulnerability, often misunderstood as a weakness, is in fact a profound strength that unlocks the potential for living your most authentic and fulfilling life. It’s about opening ourselves up to new experiences, stepping outside familiar boundaries, and allowing for growth. Recently, our community had the privilege to explore this powerful concept firsthand at our exciting “Bloodys and Bouldering” event, hosted in collaboration with our esteemed partner, Lorissa’s Kitchen. This unique gathering was designed to inspire participants to embrace discomfort, connect with others, and discover the transformative power of vulnerability in a vibrant, supportive environment.

Reliving the “Bloodys and Bouldering” Experience

For those who couldn’t join us, I’ve compiled a comprehensive recap of our incredible “Bloodys and Bouldering” event. It was an absolute blast, filled with laughter, challenges, and new connections! But before we dive into the details of that fantastic day, keep scrolling to delve deeper into my personal journey with vulnerability and how it has profoundly shaped my life.

The inspiration behind “Bloodys and Bouldering” stemmed from a desire to create an event that encouraged our community to engage in something truly different. We believe that vulnerability often reveals hidden strengths and passions we never knew we possessed. Our goal was to provide a supportive space where participants could embrace this vulnerability, proving to themselves that stepping outside their comfort zones only makes them stronger.

Five months prior to the event, I myself was terrified of trying bouldering. The idea of climbing without ropes, relying solely on my own strength and problem-solving, felt incredibly intimidating. It took Linley’s persistent encouragement (about ten invitations!) before I finally agreed to give it a try. And I am so profoundly grateful I did, because it quickly transformed into an exhilarating addiction. Bouldering is now one of my favorite post-work activities, constantly challenging me to push my physical and mental limits. It’s a powerful metaphor for life itself – facing obstacles, finding new paths, and celebrating small victories.

As I shared my bouldering adventures on Instagram, I realized many of our FFF followers expressed interest but were held back by the same intimidation I initially felt. This shared experience sparked the idea for an event. It was a no-brainer: we had to bring our community together at our favorite bouldering gym to demystify the sport and show everyone how empowering it can be.

We proudly hosted “Bloodys and Bouldering” at the Minneapolis Bouldering Project (MBP). My bouldering journey began there in November, thanks to Linley’s recommendation. MBP is far more than just a bouldering gym; it’s a vibrant hub encompassing a yoga studio, a fitness studio, and even a co-working space, all conveniently located in the lively North Loop of Minneapolis, MN. However, what truly makes MBP special is its incredible community. It’s a space where judgment is absent, and the staff’s passion for climbing and genuine support for every individual, regardless of skill level, is truly inspiring.

Event Itinerary: From Ascending Walls to Socializing with Sips

Our event kicked off with a comprehensive “Climbing 101” class, expertly led by some of MBP’s most amazing instructors. This foundational session was crucial, allowing participants to gradually ease into the activity by learning essential safety techniques and basic climbing movements in a controlled and encouraging environment. It was wonderful to see confidence build as everyone got a feel for the holds and the rhythm of the climb.

Following the introductory class, attendees enjoyed an hour of free climbing. The beauty of this open session was the incredible diversity of skill levels present – from seasoned experts gracefully navigating complex routes to enthusiastic newbies bravely attempting their first ascents. The atmosphere was electric with camaraderie, as climbers cheered each other on and shared tips. My greatest joy was witnessing so many people try something entirely new, embracing the challenge with genuine smiles and a clear sense of enjoyment. The shared experience of pushing boundaries created an immediate bond among everyone.

After the exhilarating climb, everyone transitioned to MBP’s comfortable co-working space, where the “Bloodys” part of our event truly came to life. This was an opportunity to relax, mingle, and refuel after an energetic session.

As expected from a Fit Foodie Finds event, delicious food and refreshing drinks were at the heart of the post-climb celebration! Our charcuterie boards were a feast for both the eyes and the palate, generously laden with an assortment of Lorissa’s Kitchen premium protein snacks, a selection of artisanal cheeses, fresh seasonal fruits, crunchy nuts, and, of course, plenty of decadent chocolate. It was a perfect spread that catered to diverse tastes while offering wholesome, satisfying options.

For those with a sweet tooth, we brought in delightful Glam Doll Donuts, specially customized to spell out “Bloodys + Bouldering.” Because truly, who can resist a beautifully crafted donut after a challenging workout? They were a huge hit!

The undisputed main attraction of the post-climb gathering was our magnificent Bloody Mary Bar. We proudly featured thisFem pint glasses, brimming with an array of tempting garnishes. These included Lorissa’s Kitchen 100% grass-fed beef sticks, savory cheese skewers, crisp celery, and a premium organic Bloody Mary Mix. Guests had the choice of enjoying their Bloody Mary with or without liquor, ensuring everyone could partake in the festive spirit. The bar was incredibly popular, a testament to the delicious offerings – not a single drop of Bloody Mary mix was left by the end of the event! #winning. A special highlight were the new 100% grass-fed beef sticks from Lorissa’s Kitchen, available in tantalizing Original, Smokey Sweet, and Jalapeno flavors. These fantastic protein-packed snacks are conveniently available on Amazon and at select convenience stores, making them perfect for on-the-go fuel.

On Vulnerability: The Unseen Force That Transformed My Life

The concept of vulnerability holds a deeply personal significance for me, one that dates back to 2012. During my senior year at the University of Minnesota, navigating a new relationship, and grappling with what I now recognize as a nascent recovery from an eating disorder (though I wasn’t ready to call it that then), I penned a reflection on vulnerability. It was the first time I truly paused to consider the profound meaning of the word and its intricate application to my own life and human existence.

I revisited a passage from that 2012 post, inspired by the insightful work of Brene Brown on “The Power of Vulnerability”:

“However, she (referring to the Ted Talk: Power of Vulnerability, by Brene Brown) describes vulnerability as the way of life. Everyone is vulnerable. Risk taking is vulnerable. Relationship is vulnerable. Letting yourself be wanted and loved is vulnerable. You need vulnerability in order to live.”

Six years later, I felt compelled to revisit this crucial notion of vulnerability because, since that initial reflection, it has served as a powerful catalyst, meticulously shaping nearly every aspect of my life. It was through embracing vulnerability that I secured my first job out of college, and a mere year and a half later, found the courage to leave it behind to dedicate myself full-time to building Fit Foodie Finds. This seemingly risky decision was an act of profound vulnerability that paid off exponentially.

Vulnerability was also instrumental in helping me acknowledge and confront my unhealthy relationship with food and fitness. It allowed me to seek the help I desperately needed, to attend a support group, and to begin addressing a mental illness that had subtly governed my life. Furthermore, it empowered me to recognize that I was in an unhealthy relationship and that my self-worth extended far beyond having a boyfriend. The list of such transformative moments, fueled by vulnerability, truly goes on and on. The overarching point I strive to convey is this:

When you allow yourself to be vulnerable, you create the space for the most extraordinary things in life to unfold.

In my experience, cultivating this very quality of vulnerability is not just beneficial, but essential to living your absolute best life. While this might sound philosophical, its practical implications are quite straightforward. Consider this: If I had never mustered the vulnerability to attend an eating disorder support group and seek the help of an antidepressant, I would likely still be ensnared by the relentless grip of eating and exercise obsession. If I hadn’t taken the vulnerable leap to quit my full-time job, Fit Foodie Finds might never have flourished into the thriving community it is today. And if I hadn’t found the strength to be vulnerable and end an unfulfilling relationship, I wouldn’t be experiencing the profound joy and connection I now share with the love of my life. Do you see the pattern? Taking significant risks and deliberately stepping outside your comfort zone can be terrifying, even “scare you shitless,” as I once felt. Yet, it is precisely these acts of courage that infuse life with its deepest meaning, richest experiences, and most profound rewards.

So, why tie the profound concept of vulnerability with an event like “Bloodys and Bouldering”? Because for me, bouldering served as a tangible, recent example of this principle in action. It was an activity I had never attempted, an unknown territory that demanded I embrace my vulnerability. It required me to accept the possibility of failure, to learn new skills, and to push past my initial fears. And in doing so, I didn’t just conquer a climbing wall; I discovered a new passion, a form of exercise I now engage in multiple times a week, a vibrant community, and another layer of personal growth. The event itself was a collective exercise in this very principle, encouraging everyone to find their own moments of courage and connection.
