Wisdom for My Twenty-Year-Old Self

Life’s Golden Lessons: Embracing Authenticity and Growth in Your Twenties and Beyond

As we celebrate a significant five-year milestone since the inception of Fit Foodie Finds (FFF), it’s a profound moment to pause, reflect, and share the invaluable lessons learned on this extraordinary journey. When this venture first began, a younger Lee, barely twenty and a college junior, was navigating the complexities of an eating disorder recovery, wrestling with anxiety, meticulous routines, rigidity, and acute self-consciousness. Her self-worth was often tied to external validation, and her personal standards were impossibly high. Fast forward five years, and the transformation has been monumental, marked by a deep dive into self-exploration and a commitment to living life on her own terms.

This period has witnessed a brave departure from a secure corporate career, embracing the exhilarating leap into full-time entrepreneurship. It has been a whirlwind of extensive travel, opening eyes to new cultures and perspectives. Along the way, navigating the joys and challenges of a first serious relationship and enduring the profound experience of a first heartbreak have shaped resilience. The expansion into two additional websites speaks to a burgeoning passion and drive. Crucially, these years have been defined by a conscious shift towards intentional living, cultivating happiness in every endeavor, and fostering a deep sense of self-acceptance. Though an old soul at heart, lately there’s a renewed sense of youthfulness and vigor. While every experience of the early twenties holds its own merit, there are several pieces of wisdom that, in hindsight, would have been transformative to hear then. These are lessons not just for the young, but for anyone seeking to live a more authentic and fulfilling life.

Embracing Your Authentic Self: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Embrace Your Uniqueness: If You’re Not Weird, You’re Boring.

From whimsical faces to spontaneous songs and an admitted “ball obsession,” my quirks are an undeniable part of who I am, and frankly, I think they’re pretty awesome. In a world that often pressures us into conformity, discovering and embracing your unique brand of “weirdness” is incredibly liberating. It’s about shedding the societal expectation of “normal” – a concept that, more often than not, leads to a rather mundane existence. Throughout my 25 years, the most profound realization has been that authenticity is a superpower. Why strive for bland normalcy when you can celebrate the vibrant tapestry of your individuality? Just because a path is popular doesn’t make it the right one for you. I deeply admire individuals who exude genuine personality, whose words are unexpected, witty, or refreshingly sarcastic. These are the people who spark curiosity and make life infinitely more interesting. So, I urge you to lean into your eccentricities, let your inner child play, and dare to be gloriously, unapologetically you. Your uniqueness is not a flaw; it’s your most captivating attribute, one that will attract genuine connections and fill your life with genuine joy.

Nourish Your Temple: Your Body Is a Wonderland, So Treat It With Respect.

This advice holds a particularly poignant weight for me, given my past struggles. The early twenties can often be a period of extremes when it comes to body image and health. Many indulge in unhealthy habits, while others, like my younger self, fall into a different kind of trap: restrictive eating and excessive exercise, driven by an unhealthy, distorted definition of “wellness.” I treated my body with a similar disregard as those who might overindulge, just from the opposite end of the spectrum. This wasn’t healthy; it was a form of self-punishment masked as discipline. Looking back, I wish I could tell my 20-year-old self to embrace moderation. To understand that an occasional indulgence – be it a late-night pizza after a spontaneous night out – doesn’t derail your health journey. Life thrives on balance, not on rigid rules or punishing extremes. Your body is an incredible vessel, capable of so much, and it deserves kindness, nourishment, and respect. It’s about listening to its needs, fueling it mindfully, moving it joyfully, and rejecting the pervasive pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty ideals. Cultivating a compassionate relationship with your body is a lifelong journey, far more rewarding than chasing fleeting perfection.

Prioritize Fulfillment: It Doesn’t Matter How Much Money You Make, It Matters How Happy You Are.

This lesson is a cornerstone for anyone in their twenties and beyond. In a society that often equates success with financial wealth, it’s easy to get caught in the pursuit of more dollars. However, my journey has unequivocally proven that genuine happiness consistently trumps monetary gain. Financial stability is important, yes, but true fulfillment stems from a deeper place. Your definition of happiness will be uniquely yours, and the most crucial quest is to discover what that truly means for you. It might be the serene calm of a daily walk by the lake, the comforting aroma of freshly baked cookies, or the rhythmic satisfaction of crocheting a scarf. These simple, often free, acts can bring immense joy and a sense of purpose that no salary ever could. The mantra “you do you” couldn’t be more fitting here. Invest your time and energy into activities, relationships, and pursuits that genuinely light up your soul, regardless of their perceived monetary value. True wealth is not measured in bank accounts, but in the richness of your experiences and the depth of your contentment.

Cultivating Connections and Embracing Life’s Flow

Balance Digital and Real Life: Cyberspace Is Cool and All, But Don’t Forget About Fostering Relationships in Real Life.

In our hyper-connected world, technology and social media have become an undeniable force, often demanding our constant attention. While these digital tools offer incredible avenues for connection and information, their incessant presence can also isolate us from what truly matters: authentic human connection. It’s imperative to intentionally disconnect. Make it a daily practice to switch off your devices, even for brief periods, and fully immerse yourself in the present moment. True relationships are nurtured face-to-face, through shared laughter, empathetic listening, and the irreplaceable nuances of non-verbal communication. Prioritizing quality time with friends and family, free from the distractions of screens, strengthens bonds, builds deeper trust, and enriches your emotional well-being in ways that no online interaction ever can. Remember, while cyberspace connects, real-life relationships define and sustain us.

Embrace the Unexpected: Be Spontaneous.

If you knew me five years ago, “spontaneous” would have been the last word used to describe me. My days were meticulously planned, down to every meal and workout session, and I adhered to that plan with unwavering discipline. While structure has its merits, such rigidity can stifle joy and limit growth. Over the past five years, I’ve made a conscious effort to inject spontaneity into my daily life, challenging myself to embrace the unplanned. The profound lesson? Life is inherently unpredictable, and the more adaptable and willing you are to “go with the flow,” the more gracefully you navigate its twists and turns. Spontaneity isn’t just about thrilling adventures; it’s about freeing yourself from the shackles of overthinking and control. It opens doors to unexpected opportunities, fosters resilience, and imbues everyday life with a sense of wonder and excitement. It is, truly, a beautiful and transformative thing.

Leverage Strengths, Delegate Weaknesses: Do What You Are Really Good At and Be Resourceful When It Comes to Things You Suck At.

There’s a common misconception that doing everything yourself is the most efficient path to success. However, my journey, particularly in building businesses, has taught me the immense power of collaboration. A cohesive team, where individuals leverage their unique strengths, will always outperform a single person trying to do it all. Learn to identify your core competencies – those areas where you truly excel and can make a significant impact. Then, be resourceful. Seek out individuals whose strengths complement your weaknesses. This might mean building a team, delegating tasks, or even outsourcing. Embrace leadership, empower others, and allow yourself to “destroy” (in the best possible way!) in your areas of genius, while trusting others to handle what you’re not good at. This strategic approach not only optimizes efficiency but also fosters innovation, reduces burnout, and ultimately leads to far greater and more sustainable success, both personally and professionally.

Redefining Beauty, Navigating Adversity, and Building Strong Foundations

Redefine Beauty: You Don’t Have to Have a 6-Pack to Be Beautiful.

If I could have a heart-to-heart with my 20-year-old self, this would be the absolute cornerstone of our conversation. As women, we are constantly bombarded with idealized, often unattainable, images of beauty: the perfect face, a tiny waist, and a curvaceous figure. This societal pressure creates an internal struggle, pushing us to conform to an external standard that is rarely healthy or realistic. The truth is, the pursuit of a six-pack often comes at the expense of other aspects of a healthy, balanced body, including the natural curves that make each woman unique and beautiful. I’ve learned to appreciate my own “junk in the trunk” and the natural shape of my body. Beauty is not about achieving some elusive state of perfection; it’s about embracing every aspect of who you are, loving your body for its strength and vitality, and recognizing that true radiance emanates from within. The more deeply you love and accept yourself, the more authentically beautiful you become, regardless of societal norms or fleeting trends. Self-love is the most potent beauty elixir.

Embrace Joy and Resilience: From Mindful Indulgence to Healing Heartbreak.

Life is meant to be lived fully, encompassing both joyful indulgence and the resilience to overcome pain.
On the lighter side, sometimes you just need to have an effing drink, or two! Seriously, hot damn! The essence of social drinking is often about connecting with others, unwinding, and letting loose a little. It’s crucial to remember that enjoying a margarita or two won’t instantly pack on ten pounds, lead to dire consequences, or prevent you from waking up refreshed the next morning. It’s about balance, moderation, and not letting irrational fears dictate your social life and moments of relaxation. Chill out and savor the experience.

On a more profound note, while heartbreak sucks, it undeniably gets better. It’s astonishing how much personal growth I’ve experienced on this FFF journey. When I started this blog, I hadn’t yet navigated the complexities of a serious romantic relationship. Heartbreak, though agonizing, serves as a powerful catalyst for growth. It forces you to delve deeper into self-love, to redefine what a significant other truly means to you, and to gain invaluable perspective on your desires and boundaries in relationships. While the pain can feel overwhelming, it always subsides. The key is to consciously surround yourself with positivity, allowing yourself to feel but then channeling that newfound energy into discovering what genuinely brings you happiness. Heartbreak is a difficult but ultimately strengthening chapter in your life story.

Cultivate Meaningful Relationships: Be Okay With Having 5 REALLY Great Friends Instead of 100 Just Okay Friends.

In a world obsessed with social media follower counts, it’s vital to prioritize intentionality in your relationships. This often means focusing on cultivating a smaller, more intimate circle of truly profound connections rather than a sprawling network of superficial acquaintances. The depth and quality of your interactions far outweigh the sheer number of people you know. “Popularity” is a fleeting concept; what endures are loyal, supportive bonds. If your mom and sister are among your closest confidantes, it speaks volumes about the strength of your foundational relationships – and that’s absolutely right. Be steadfastly loyal, remain true to yourself and your friends, laugh often, embrace your shared quirks, and crucially, only invest your time and energy in those who reciprocate your care and commitment. These deep, reciprocal relationships are the bedrock of a rich and fulfilling life.

Chasing Dreams and Trusting Your Inner Voice

Embrace Discomfort for Growth: Challenge Yourself. Do Things That Make You Feel Uncomfortable Because It WILL Pay Off.

As I shared during a recent talk at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, true success rarely blossoms within the confines of your comfort zone. Growth, innovation, and genuine accomplishment are almost always found on the other side of discomfort. It’s a fundamental truth: life becomes incredibly dull and stagnant when you avoid challenges. Deliberately seeking out experiences that push your boundaries, whether in your career, personal life, or hobbies, is essential for continuous evolution. It builds resilience, expands your capabilities, and fosters a profound sense of self-belief. Crave more, dare to do more, and watch what incredible possibilities unfold when you embrace the unknown. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable; it’s where the magic truly happens.

Proactive Pursuit: You Want It? Go Get It.

This is an undeniable truth: you rarely receive what you don’t actively pursue. My decision to leave my full-time corporate job two and a half years ago was a monumental risk. My income from FFF hadn’t yet matched my corporate salary, but I had absolute clarity on my vision: to work for myself and transform my passion into a thriving career. There was no clear roadmap, no one to show me precisely how. So, I took a massive leap of faith, trusting that I would figure it out along the way. This bold step illuminated a crucial life lesson: if you genuinely desire something, you must go and claim it. Want to explore Spain? Start planning that trip. Dream of learning to play the guitar? Pick one up and start practicing. The biggest impediment to achieving your goals is often inaction. Stop merely talking about your aspirations and start actively doing what it takes to manifest them.

Trust Your Inner Compass: If You Don’t Know, You Know.

This profoundly simple yet powerful piece of advice was shared with me during a period of heartbreak, and it resonated deeply. We often hear the phrase, “if you know, you know,” implying a shared, unspoken understanding. However, I’ve found that the inverse is equally true: “if you don’t know, you know.” This speaks to the incredible wisdom of your intuition. Even when your conscious mind is grappling with uncertainty, your gut instinct often holds the accurate answer or guides you towards the right decision. Learning to quiet the external noise and truly listen to that inner voice is a skill worth cultivating. Your intuition is a powerful, reliable compass, guiding you through life’s most complex choices, even when logic seems elusive. Trust it implicitly.

Happy December, and here’s to a lifetime of growth and authentic living!
