My 26th Birthday Weekend Treadmill Ladder Challenge

An Unforgettable Birthday Weekend in Milwaukee: Culinary Delights, City Sights, and a Power-Packed Workout

What could be better than celebrating a birthday surrounded by your favorite people, indulging in exquisite food and drink, all while basking in glorious weather? My recent birthday weekend in Milwaukee was exactly that – a perfect blend of cherished company, gourmet experiences, and the vibrant charm of one of Wisconsin’s most dynamic cities. With my “Man Candy” recently relocating to the historic Third Ward, everything desirable was within delightful walking distance, transforming the city into our personal playground. Join me as I recount every delicious detail of this incredible celebration, from hidden culinary gems to breathtaking lakeside views, and even a workout that powered our adventures.

Thursday: A Musical Road Trip and Milwaukee Brews

The birthday festivities kicked off with an epic five-hour road trip from Minneapolis to Milwaukee with my dear friend, Lin. We turned the highway into our personal concert hall, singing our hearts out to every song on the playlist – a true testament to friendship and good vibes. If you’ve ever followed our antics on Snapchat (FitFoodieFinds), you’ll know exactly the kind of energy I’m talking about; for everyone else, just imagine two friends having the time of their lives!

Our first stop in Milwaukee was a mission to the Milwaukee Brewing Company. We met Man Candy there to procure a special treat: “Gin Barrel Aged O-Gii,” a limited edition brew perfect for celebrating Milwaukee Day (April 14th, in homage to the city’s 414 area code). Despite an hour-long wait, the excitement was palpable, and we certainly made it worth our while, leaving with seven bottles of this coveted beer. The anticipation only heightened our appreciation for the local craft scene, making the wait a part of the adventure. Naturally, a crucial moment calls for a photo op! I couldn’t resist asking Mark (aka Man Candy) to snap a quick selfie with our prize. His promptness in capturing the moment, without a second thought, truly highlighted the relaxed and fun atmosphere of the day.

After our successful beer expedition, a fierce craving for wings took over. Out of the myriad incredible dining options Milwaukee offers, our hearts were set on the crispy, saucy perfection of wings. Our destination: Points East Pub in the Lower East Side. This iconic spot is renowned for serving some of the absolute best wings in the city, a true local favorite that consistently delivers on flavor and quality. And let’s settle this debate once and for all: blue cheese dressing is undeniably superior to ranch when it comes to wing dipping – who’s with me?! While indulging in the deliciousness, I also made sure to devour all the accompanying celery, ensuring a little bit of healthy balance amidst the celebratory feasting. This classic pub experience was the perfect end to our first evening in MKE.

Friday: A Productive Blend of Work, Wanderlust, and Wonderful Food

Friday brought a more relaxed pace, starting with a magnificent breakfast scramble made from leftover groceries from our recipe testing – a delicious and resourceful way to kickstart the day. Following our hearty meal, Lin and I tackled a vigorous Treadmill Ladder Circuit workout (more on this power-packed routine later!) before heading to the vibrant Third Ward. We settled into my beloved Milwaukee coffee chain, Colectivo Coffee, a bustling hub perfect for remote work. Armed with iced lattes, each fortified with an extra shot of espresso, we delved into our tasks while Man Candy worked from home nearby. The cozy ambiance, artisanal coffee, and the lively atmosphere of Colectivo made for a truly productive and enjoyable morning.

For lunch, we reunited with Man Candy at The Milwaukee Public Market, an absolute gem and a must-visit for anyone experiencing Milwaukee for the first time. This bustling indoor market is a foodie’s paradise, boasting an incredible array of vendors offering everything from fresh seafood to artisanal cheeses, gourmet chocolates, and international cuisine. It’s a sensory delight, where local flavors meet global inspiration. Lin and I decided to explore the Asian flavors, splitting two delectable sushi rolls and a savory chicken pad Thai from Thai-Namite. Every bite was a burst of authentic flavor, leaving us craving more!

After a satisfying lunch, we picked up an assortment of local craft beers and ciders, eager to explore Man Candy’s brand new apartment in the Third Ward. Since the big move was scheduled for the next day, the apartment was still an empty canvas – providing the perfect, minimalist setting for enjoying cold drinks on a relaxed Friday night, creating a blank slate for future memories and adventures (and perhaps a subtle nod to that classic country song!).

As the afternoon progressed, we realized Linley simply had to experience the breathtaking beauty of Lake Michigan – truly one of Milwaukee’s most captivating natural features. We strolled down to the serene shoreline, marveling at the vast expanse of azure water and admiring the architectural masterpiece that is the Milwaukee Art Museum. Its iconic “wings” structure is a sight to behold against the lake, and the anticipation for summer days spent by this stunning body of water became almost unbearable!

Friday night was the official birthday celebration, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Given my love for tasting a little bit of everything, we opted for a small plates dinner – a truly perfect choice for the three of us to share and explore various flavors. Our destination was Ginger, a unique establishment that ingeniously combines a tapas restaurant with a vibrant drag queen bar. The food was absolutely delicious, offering an eclectic mix of flavors and beautifully presented dishes! We shared a bottle of wine and ordered an array of small plates, savoring each distinct flavor in a lively and entertaining atmosphere. Post-dinner, our adventure continued to Bugsy’s Back Alley Saloon, Milwaukee’s most entertaining speakeasy. Hidden away, Bugsy’s transports you to another era with its clandestine charm. There, we met up with some of Man Candy’s friends and danced the night away to the incredible live music of an acoustic 90s cover artist. It was a dream come true, especially when he played two of my all-time favorite songs: “Mr. Jones” and “Meet Virginia.” If you ever find yourself at Bugsy’s, I wholeheartedly recommend their Moscow Mule – it’s perfection in a glass, expertly crafted to complete the speakeasy experience.

Saturday: The Big Move and a Well-Deserved Pizza Feast

Saturday was dominated by the monumental task of moving. We began the day with a much-needed energizing breakfast at Cafe Benelux, one of our favorite breakfast spots in MKE, renowned for its European-inspired ambiance and delightful morning fare. More coffee was certainly in order to fuel the day’s arduous tasks! It was the perfect send-off for Linley before her journey back to the Twin Cities. I indulged in the classic American breakfast, specifically craving crispy bacon to fuel the busy day ahead. And busy it was! What followed were ten hours of intense moving. While I have a love-hate relationship with the moving process – the exhaustion is real, but the satisfaction of a new beginning is immense – I fully embraced my role as the master unpacker, meticulously organizing the kitchen and ensuring everything found its rightful place in Man Candy’s new Third Ward apartment. Teamwork truly made the dream work!

The well-deserved reward for all our hard work came on Saturday night: a celebratory dinner at Riverfront Pizzeria. One of the greatest advantages of Man Candy’s new apartment is its prime location in the Third Ward, offering easy walking access to an incredible variety of restaurants and attractions. After a strenuous day of lifting and unpacking, the thought of devouring an entire pizza myself seemed entirely plausible and incredibly tempting! We embraced the philosophy of “eat all the pizza and drink all the cocktails,” celebrating our efforts with hearty Italian comfort food. And, of course, no birthday weekend dinner is complete without dessert. We made sure to leave ample room for a sweet treat – because everyone deserves a delightful ending to a hard day, especially during a birthday celebration!

Sunday: A Relaxed Birthday Celebration with Grilling and Froyo

Sunday, my actual birthday, was a much-anticipated day of relaxation and indulgence. We started with a delicious pancake breakfast and a copious amount of coffee at Zak’s Cafe, a beloved local spot known for its comforting breakfast fare. It was Milwaukee’s first truly beautiful day of the season, making the outdoor seating absolutely perfect for enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. To our surprise, we seemed to be the only ones taking full advantage of the wonderful weather, basking in the morning glow! Post-Zak’s, we embarked on a refreshing long walk around Milwaukee, soaking in the city’s charm and discovering new nooks and crannies until exhaustion sweetly called for a much-deserved nap.

By 3 PM, our appetites had returned, and we decided on the ultimate birthday dinner: grilling! We walked back to The Milwaukee Public Market to pick up fresh ingredients, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere once more. Picture this: succulent bacon-wrapped chicken breast, perfectly roasted red potatoes, and tender asparagus – a truly epic birthday feast cooked right at home. I had never attempted bacon-wrapped chicken breast before, but I’m thrilled to report it was a resounding success – incredibly easy to prepare and utterly delicious, achieving that perfect balance of crispy bacon and juicy chicken. We inaugurated our sleek new Fuego Element Grill, which proved to be not only straightforward to assemble but also remarkably easy to use, providing even heat and precise control. And did I mention how incredibly stylish it looks? It added a touch of modern elegance to our outdoor cooking experience, making the evening even more special.

And because every memorable dinner deserves a delightful conclusion, froyo it was! We headed to MyYoMy and shared a generously sized cup piled high with an array of delicious toppings. It was the perfect sweet, refreshing ending to a perfect birthday, creating one last moment of shared joy.

The Ultimate Birthday Workout: Energizing Treadmill Ladder Circuit

While this post blossomed into a comprehensive recounting of my fabulous birthday weekend, its original intent was to share an incredible workout routine that Lin and I crushed on Friday morning. This “Treadmill Ladder Circuit” is a dynamic and effective full-body workout, perfect for anyone looking to boost their fitness, whether at home or in the gym. Inspired by my home gym PEC, this circuit is a powerful combination of intense incline sprints and targeted full-body exercises, designed to maximize your calorie burn, enhance cardiovascular endurance, and strengthen every major muscle group efficiently.

The beauty of this workout lies in its versatility and intensity. It systematically alternates between challenging cardiovascular bursts on the treadmill and strength-building circuits off it, ensuring a comprehensive fitness experience. The visual guide (see image below) provides a clear breakdown of the exercises and intervals, making it easy to follow along. However, don’t feel constrained; the circuit components are highly adaptable to suit your available equipment and fitness level. If you lack specific gym equipment, simply swap in effective bodyweight exercises such as squats, lunges, push-ups, planks, or burpees. Similarly, if a treadmill isn’t available, you can take your sprints outdoors, timing yourself for the designated intervals to achieve the same invigorating cardiovascular benefits. This adaptable approach ensures that almost anyone can integrate this energizing routine into their fitness regimen, making it truly accessible and effective.

Designed to be efficient and effective, this Treadmill Ladder Circuit typically takes around 50 minutes to complete, offering a robust workout within a manageable timeframe. The exact duration can vary slightly depending on your recovery periods between sprints and circuits, allowing you to tailor the intensity and challenge to your current fitness level and goals. It’s a fantastic way to challenge your endurance, build functional strength, and leave you feeling invigorated and accomplished.

Mix high-intensity treadmill incline sprints with a full-body circuit for the ultimate 50 minute calorie burn and strength building

A personal note: during this particular weekend, due to a broken foot, I modified the workout by safely using the elliptical instead of the treadmill for the cardio portions. This ensured a non-weight-bearing, safe, and equally effective cardiovascular challenge, proving that the workout can be adapted to various physical conditions and limitations. Always remember to listen to your body, consult with a professional if necessary, and adjust your exercises as needed to ensure safety and effectiveness.

This birthday weekend was truly a perfect blend of unforgettable moments, from exploring Milwaukee’s vibrant culinary landscape to embracing challenging workouts and celebrating with loved ones. It was a wonderful reminder of the joy of discovery, the warmth of companionship, and the simple pleasures that make life so rich. Happy Friday, and here’s to many more adventures filled with good food, great company, and invigorating fitness!
