Hey friends! I’m currently wrapping up an incredible trip to San Francisco, and as always, fitness has been a priority, even with a busy travel schedule. One of my go-to routines that has consistently delivered results, both at home and on my adventures, is the very workout I’m excited to share with you today. It’s truly a game-changer for maintaining consistency and feeling great, no matter your location.

Before we dive into the invigorating Tabata session, let’s take a moment to discuss a crucial element of post-workout recovery and daily nutrition: protein powder. Lately, I’ve become a huge advocate! While I wasn’t always a “hardcore” protein powder user, I’ve noticed a significant difference in my ability to stay full and satisfied after workouts and throughout the day. Protein powder has truly been the missing piece, helping me manage hunger and support muscle recovery effectively. We frequently receive questions about which protein powders we recommend, both before and after workouts, so let’s explore some of our favorites.

Fuel Your Body: Our Top Protein Powder Picks & Why We Love Them

Incorporating a high-quality protein powder into your diet can be incredibly beneficial, whether you’re looking to enhance muscle recovery, boost satiety, or simply ensure you’re meeting your daily protein needs. Here are a few brands we consistently turn to, each offering unique benefits:

  • Aloha Plant-Based Protein Powder: An excellent choice for those seeking a dairy-free option. We especially enjoy the versatility and taste of their vanilla and chocolate flavors.
  • Designer Whey Protein: A classic whey protein that delivers on taste and performance. The French Vanilla is a standout for its delicious, smooth profile.
  • Organic Valley – Organic Fuel Whey Protein: A fantastic organic option that provides a robust protein boost. Their vanilla and chocolate flavors are consistently rich and satisfying.

We typically rotate between Aloha, Designer Protein, and Organic Valley based on our preferences and needs. Currently, I’m really enjoying an Organic Valley kick! I appreciate not only its taste and how it makes me feel but also Organic Valley as an organization committed to sustainable, organic practices. Aloha is another truly amazing protein powder, especially if you’re exploring plant-based options. While I haven’t done extensive baking with it, I’ve successfully mixed it into a variety of recipes. It’s dairy-free, gluten-free, GMO-free, and organic – making it a clean and conscious choice for many.

Both Designer Whey and Organic Valley are dairy-based, but they are also GMO-free and gluten-free, catering to specific dietary considerations. When I’m evaluating protein powders, I pay close attention to the calorie, protein, and sugar ratio. While calories do matter, the amount of protein and sugar often takes precedence for me. The goal is simple: more protein and less sugar. Let’s look at how our favorites stack up:

  • Aloha Plant-Based: Approximately 150 calories | 4g sugar | 18g protein.
  • Designer Whey: Approximately 110 calories | 2g sugar | 20g protein.
  • Organic Valley: Approximately 140 calories | 3g sugar | 26g protein.

As you can see, all three brands offer a stellar nutritional profile, making them excellent choices for fueling your body effectively.

Choosing the Right Protein Powder for You: A Quick Guide

With so many options on the market, selecting the perfect protein powder can feel overwhelming. Consider these factors to help you make an informed decision:

  • Dietary Needs: Are you dairy-free, gluten-free, or vegan? Plant-based proteins like pea, rice, hemp, or a blend are great alternatives to whey.
  • Goals: Are you aiming for muscle growth, weight management, or simply increasing your protein intake? Higher protein content is generally beneficial for all these goals.
  • Taste & Mixability: Read reviews and consider starting with smaller tubs to find a flavor and texture you enjoy. Good mixability is key for a pleasant experience.
  • Ingredients: Look for powders with minimal artificial sweeteners, colors, and fillers. Opt for brands that prioritize clean ingredients.
  • Certifications: If organic, non-GMO, or third-party tested certifications are important to you, check for these labels.

I would love to hear which brand and flavor of protein powder are staples in your home! Share your favorites in the comments!

Now, let’s get back to the workout! This routine is absolutely perfect for anyone who travels frequently, doesn’t have a gym membership, or simply prefers the convenience and effectiveness of bodyweight exercises. It takes a mere 24 minutes to complete and requires no equipment, relying solely on your bodyweight. But don’t let its simplicity fool you – Tabata workouts are designed to be intensely challenging, and this one is no exception.

The key to Tabata’s effectiveness lies in your effort. You must go all out – and I mean absolutely all out – during the 20 seconds of work. Push your limits, maintain good form, and trust that 24 minutes is truly all you need to achieve a powerful, full-body burn that will leave you feeling accomplished and invigorated.

Ignite your metabolism with this killer 24-minute bodyweight Tabata workout! Perfect for travelers and fitness enthusiasts on the go.

The Best Travel Tabata (Bodyweight!)

Workout Description: This workout consists of three distinct Tabata circuits. For each Tabata circuit, you will perform two exercises. Complete each exercise for 20 seconds of maximum effort, followed by a 10-second rest period before moving to the next exercise. You will cycle through both exercises in a Tabata circuit 4 times (meaning 8 rounds total for each circuit). Once you’ve completed all 4 rounds of a Tabata circuit, you’ll take a brief rest (60-90 seconds) before moving on to the next circuit. After completing all three Tabata circuits, repeat the entire workout one more time for a total of 24 minutes of intense training.

Why Tabata Works: The Science Behind the Sweat

Tabata training is a form of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) that was developed by Japanese scientist Dr. Izumi Tabata. Its effectiveness comes from:

  • Maximal Effort: The short, intense bursts of exercise force your body to work at near-maximal capacity, engaging fast-twitch muscle fibers.
  • EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption): This “afterburn effect” means your body continues to burn calories at an elevated rate for hours after your workout, contributing to fat loss.
  • Time Efficiency: It delivers significant cardiovascular and metabolic benefits in a fraction of the time compared to traditional cardio.
  • Adaptability: Perfectly suited for bodyweight exercises, making it ideal for travel or limited space.

Before You Start: Warm-Up & Cool-Down

Always begin your workout with a 5-minute dynamic warm-up to prepare your muscles and joints. This could include jogging in place, arm circles, leg swings, and bodyweight squats. Conclude your session with a 5-minute cool-down, focusing on static stretches to improve flexibility and aid recovery.

The Tabata Circuits:

Tabata #1 x4

Focus on explosive movements and maintaining core stability.

  • Double Squat Jack: Start in a squat, jump feet out and back in twice, staying low. Focus on speed and a deep squat.
  • Breakdancer: From a plank position, bring one knee towards the opposite elbow, twisting your torso, then switch sides rapidly. Keep your hips low and core engaged.

Tabata #2 x4

Challenge your upper body strength and core power.

  • Plyo Push-Ups: Perform a push-up with enough power to lift your hands briefly off the ground at the top. If too challenging, opt for regular push-ups or push-ups on your knees, focusing on speed.
  • Full Sit-Up to Reverse Crunch: Perform a full sit-up, then as you lower back down, immediately bring your knees towards your chest for a reverse crunch. This targets both upper and lower abs.

Tabata #3 x4

Engage your lower body and build core endurance.

  • 3-Pulse Lunge Jump: Perform a lunge, pulse three times at the bottom, then explosively jump to switch legs in the air, landing in a lunge on the opposite side.
  • Plank with Leg Lifts: Hold a stable plank position, then alternately lift one leg a few inches off the ground, keeping your hips level. Focus on controlled movements and minimal body rocking.

Maximizing Your Tabata Workout

  • Form Over Speed: While intensity is key, never sacrifice proper form. If your form falters, slow down or modify the exercise.
  • Listen to Your Body: Push yourself, but know your limits. Rest if needed, and don’t be afraid to adjust.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout.
  • Consistency: The real magic happens with consistency. Aim to incorporate this or similar workouts into your routine regularly.

Disclaimer: You are working out at your own risk. I am not a certified personal trainer, so please consult your doctor before starting a new fitness routine. Modify as needed and, most importantly, listen to your body!

Incorporating fitness into your travels extends beyond structured workouts. Here are a few tips to keep you moving:

  • Utilize Hotel Amenities: Many hotels have pools or basic gyms. Make use of them!

  • Pack Smart: Always bring comfortable workout clothes and shoes. Seeing them can be a great motivator.
