An Unforgettable California Escape: Our Hermosa Beach Adventure
After an exhilarating eight-day journey through the sun-kissed landscapes of California, my husband Mark and I are finally back in Minneapolis, hearts full of cherished memories and sandy footprints. This much-anticipated trip represented our primary vacation of the year, a precious opportunity to unplug, reconnect, and immerse ourselves in new experiences. For the most part, I embraced a true digital detox, limiting my online presence to quick morning email checks and sharing glimpses of our adventure on Instagram. More importantly, it was a chance to spend uninterrupted, quality time with Mark – though he playfully (and sometimes not-so-playfully) cringes every time I affectionately call him “Marky.”
Our California adventure began in the vibrant coastal city of Hermosa Beach, a quintessential Southern California paradise. We meticulously chose this particular destination for a very special reason: to proudly don our superfan hats and cheer on our incredible friend, Tim Bomgren, as he competed in an AVP Beach Volleyball Tournament. Witnessing his skill and dedication on the sand was a highlight, and we were absolutely thrilled to watch him secure an impressive 5th place finish! If you ask me, I’d happily sign up to watch high-stakes volleyball every single weekend. Hermosa Beach delivered far beyond our expectations; we were captivated by its pristine shores, the delightful company of friends Lindsey and Tim, and the incredible culinary scene that had our taste buds singing. We walked for miles, exploring every charming corner, and were delighted when Kelsey from Little Bits of Real Food and her husband Matt joined us. A bonus was catching up with my cousin Louis, who was interning at Space X for the summer and residing right in Hermosa. It was an action-packed, joyful long weekend filled with good people, good food, and unforgettable moments.
Where to Stay in Hermosa Beach: Our Accommodation Choice
Our initial plan for lodging in Hermosa Beach involved securing a charming Airbnb right near the ocean, imagining waking up to the sound of waves and having direct beach access. However, by the time we finalized our travel dates and began our search, all the prime beachfront properties were already snatched up – a testament to Hermosa’s popularity! Undeterred, we pivoted to a reliable classic: a hotel offering the convenience of a free continental breakfast.
Mark and I ultimately chose the Holiday Inn Hermosa Beach. While it wasn’t directly on the sand, it was conveniently located about a mile and a half from the beach, making for a pleasant and manageable walk. We found it amusing that locals often looked at us like we were crazy for choosing to walk to and from the beach once, sometimes even twice, a day. But for us, these walks became one of the unexpected joys of the trip. Each journey offered a delightful opportunity to admire the incredible variety of quaint, picturesque beach houses and experience the authentic neighborhood charm of Hermosa. It was a perfect way to soak in the local atmosphere and get some extra steps in!
The Holiday Inn itself served its purpose admirably, as Holiday Inns typically do. We had no major complaints, save for a minor interaction with what we presumed was the manager, who wasn’t particularly helpful. Beyond that, the hotel’s location proved to be quite strategic, situated right off Highway 1. This meant easy access to other parts of the coast and, perhaps even more importantly, a CVS pharmacy right next door. This proved invaluable for quickly restocking on travel essentials, snacks, and any forgotten items from home, making our stay that much more comfortable and convenient.
Exploring Hermosa Beach: Activities and Highlights
As I mentioned, our primary mission in Hermosa Beach was to serve as Tim Bomgren’s biggest cheerleaders at the AVP Beach Volleyball Tournament. As a dedicated sports enthusiast, Mark was absolutely in his element, especially with a personal connection to one of the athletes. We had the fantastic opportunity to watch all five of Tim’s games up close, truly experiencing the intensity and excitement of professional beach volleyball. He played exceptionally well, winning his first three matches before ultimately falling in the last two. His dedication and talent shone through, earning him a remarkable 5th place finish in the entire tournament – a testament to his standing among the nation’s best! Sharing this experience with Lindsey, equally invested and passionate, made it even more special. Her unwavering support and joyful spirit are truly infectious, making her, in my opinion, one of the best moms (and friends!) around.
Beyond the thrilling volleyball matches, our time in Hermosa Beach was filled with a diverse array of activities that allowed us to fully embrace the Southern California lifestyle:
- Coastal Run from Hermosa Beach to Manhattan Beach: One morning, we embarked on a refreshing run along the scenic oceanfront path, stretching all the way from Hermosa Beach to its equally beautiful neighbor, Manhattan Beach. The crisp ocean air, the rhythmic sound of the waves, and the stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean made this an invigorating and memorable experience. It’s an absolute must-do for anyone who loves active travel and wants to take in the breathtaking coastline.
- Relaxing Beach Days: Of course, no trip to a Californian beach town is complete without ample time simply lounging on the sand. We spent blissful hours soaking up the warm sunshine, listening to the gentle crash of the waves, and occasionally dipping our toes into the cool Pacific waters. It was the perfect antidote to our busy lives back home – pure, unadulterated relaxation.
- Sunset Views from Hermosa Beach Pier: Every evening, we made sure to catch the spectacular sunset from the iconic Hermosa Beach Pier. The vibrant hues painting the sky – oranges, pinks, and purples – as the sun dipped below the horizon were simply breathtaking. It created a magical atmosphere, with locals and tourists alike gathering to witness nature’s daily masterpiece, often accompanied by street performers and the distant cries of seagulls.

A Culinary Journey: Where We Ate in Hermosa Beach
This trip, without a doubt, was a significant culinary adventure. We consider ourselves “fit foodies,” and Hermosa Beach offered an abundance of delicious, diverse options. Paradise Bowls: Your Acai & Smoothie Oasis
Our first stop for a healthy and refreshing treat was Paradise Bowls. This place is an absolute haven for anyone craving nutrient-packed smoothies and vibrant acai bowls. The lines are often long, stretching out the door, but let me tell you, it is absolutely worth every minute of the wait! The fresh ingredients, customizable options, and the sheer deliciousness of their bowls make it the perfect breakfast, lunch, or even an afternoon pick-me-up. We found ourselves returning multiple times, fueled by their wholesome goodness.
Greenbelt: Farm-to-Table Freshness on the Pier
Located right on the pier, Greenbelt stood out as one of the few spots offering a distinct farm-to-table dining experience with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. Their menu boasted a thoughtful selection of dishes, but what truly caught our attention initially was their impressive array of local beers on tap – a definite win for us! We originally stopped in just for a drink, planning to find dinner elsewhere, but after soaking in the inviting atmosphere and seeing the delectable food being served, we ended up returning later that evening to enjoy a full meal. Their commitment to quality and local sourcing truly shines through in every dish.
Patrick Malloy’s: Unexpected Mexican Delights
One afternoon, we opted for a casual lunch at Patrick Malloy’s, lured in by their enticing half-off entrees special. While it might be an Irish restaurant by name, we were pleasantly surprised by their fantastic selection of Mexican food. I ordered the carnitas burrito, and it was absolutely phenomenal – perfectly seasoned, generously filled, and incredibly satisfying. It’s a great spot for a relaxed meal with good value and some unexpectedly delicious international flavors.
La Playita: The Quest for Authentic Mexican Food
Our mission to find the best authentic Mexican food in Hermosa Beach was triumphantly completed at La Playita. You know a place is going to be exceptional when there’s an hour-long wait for a table – and La Playita certainly lives up to the hype! The vibrant atmosphere, coupled with the incredible aromas wafting from the kitchen, built anticipation that was fully rewarded. If you are a connoisseur of authentic Mexican cuisine, a visit to La Playita is an absolute must-do. Every dish we tried was bursting with flavor, showcasing traditional recipes done to perfection.
Cafe Bonaparte: Charming Breakfast & Lunch by the Sea
For a delightful and convenient breakfast or lunch option, Cafe Bonaparte is a charming little spot located right on the pier. We grabbed a couple of their freshly made sandwiches for lunch one day, and they were utterly delicious – simple, fresh, and perfectly prepared. It’s ideal for a quick bite without sacrificing quality, allowing you to quickly get back to enjoying the beach and pier activities.
Paciugo Gelato: The Perfect Sweet Treat
Talk about a line out the door – Paciugo Gelato is clearly a local favorite for good reason! The night Kelsey and Matt joined us, we made a stop here for dessert, and it was the perfect end to our evening. With an extensive selection of rich, creamy gelato flavors, there’s something to satisfy every sweet tooth. “Ice cream everyday, please!” became our unofficial motto for a reason.
The Rockafeller: Gastropub Excellence
Highly recommended by our friends Kelsey and Matt, The Rockafeller was an absolute culinary highlight. This place was SO GOOD! Seriously, guys – you HAVE to order the sweet potato tots; they are incredibly delicious and addictive. I had been craving classic fish and chips that night, but unfortunately, they had just taken it off their menu. No worries at all, I pivoted to the fish tacos, and they were fantastic – fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The Rockafeller offers a sophisticated yet casual gastropub atmosphere with an inventive menu that impresses at every turn.
Dia de Campo: Craft Cocktails and Lively Atmosphere
For an excellent evening out centered around expertly crafted drinks, Dia de Campo is the place to be. They boast an incredible selection of margaritas, each perfectly balanced and uniquely flavored, alongside an impressive array of craft beers. The lively atmosphere and vibrant decor make it an ideal spot for enjoying a relaxed evening with friends, sipping on some of the best cocktails Hermosa Beach has to offer.
