Nicaragua Adventure: Unveiling the Magic of Yoga and Exploration

Hello friends! It’s Linley here, absolutely thrilled to finally share details of my recent, unforgettable journey to Nicaragua. Even after returning home almost two weeks ago, my mind still wanders back to the sun-kissed beaches, vibrant streets, and profound experiences of this incredible Central American gem. It’s challenging to encapsulate such a rich adventure in a single post, as every moment felt like a story waiting to be told. However, I’ll do my best to distill the essence of my trip, focusing on the most cherished memories and practical insights for fellow travelers and wellness enthusiasts.

Travel has always been more than just a hobby for me; it’s a fundamental part of who I am. My love affair with exploration began early, thanks to my parents’ adventurous spirit. My first taste of international travel in 7th grade, a remarkable trip to Hong Kong with my amazing guncles, solidified this passion. Since then, I’ve seized every opportunity to embark on a new adventure, each experience enriching my life in countless ways. I thrive on the thrill of discovering new places, immersing myself in different cultures, learning new perspectives, and simply existing in the moment without a rigid agenda. I am incredibly fortunate to have a supportive job and colleagues who understand and value the transformative power of travel. The ability to disconnect, leave my laptop behind, and truly breathe for a couple of weeks is a gift I deeply cherish. #teamfitfoodie

The Genesis of a Dream: A Yoga Retreat in Nicaragua

My Nicaraguan escapade truly began at TaraNa Yoga, my guncles’ renowned studio in South Minneapolis, known for offering some of the best yoga experiences in the city. During a class, they announced an upcoming yoga retreat to Nicaragua, and I knew instantly that I had to be there. Without hesitation, I reached out to two of my dearest friends, and just like that, our adventure was set in motion. TaraNa Yoga (find them on IG, by the way!) has a history of hosting incredible retreats, particularly in Italy. However, this was the first time that my budget and schedule perfectly aligned, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the timing. This retreat offered the perfect blend of mindfulness, movement, and exotic exploration.

The core of our trip was a seven-day yoga retreat nestled in El Viejo Chinandega, a serene beach town. However, a small, intrepid group of us decided to extend our journey, maximizing our time in Nicaragua. This group included my guncles, seasoned travelers themselves, Randy, another exceptional yoga instructor for our retreat, and my two besties. Randy, having explored Nicaragua previously, highly recommended a pre-retreat visit to Granada. It was a blessing to have such experienced travelers guiding the way, as I, typically the meticulous itinerary planner, found myself in the blissful position of simply showing up. This unplanned approach was a refreshing change, allowing me to fully embrace every moment as it unfolded.

My journey through Nicaragua was a tale of two distinct yet equally enchanting halves: the serene yoga retreat in El Viejo Chinandega and the vibrant cultural immersion in Granada. While the main event was the retreat, our exploration of Granada set a fantastic tone for the entire trip, offering a dynamic contrast. So, let’s dive in, starting with the deeply restorative experience of the yoga retreat, followed by the colorful escapades in Granada.

El Viejo Chinandega: A Sanctuary for the Soul

Before this trip, I honestly didn’t realize how much I needed a yoga retreat. For those who have experienced one, you’ll understand the profound impact. Our retreat, beautifully orchestrated by TaraNa Yoga, took place at the exquisite Coco Loco Eco-Resort in Nicaragua, a true haven of tranquility and mindful living.

Coco Loco Eco-Resort: Where Community Meets Sustainability

Coco Loco is more than just a resort; it’s a magical embodiment of a dream conceived by four best friends adventuring through Central America. They fell in love with the region’s raw beauty and envisioned a simple, sustainable eco-resort that would foster a global community. Their vision blossomed into a reality that not only welcomes guests from all corners of the world but also actively gives back to the local Nicaraguan community, making a significant positive impact.

The resort itself is a testament to thoughtful design and environmental consciousness. It features charming individual sustainable bungalows, a spacious community gathering area, a vibrant dining room, a dedicated yoga studio, and a truly killer patio complete with a refreshing pool. All of this is just a short, barefoot stroll across the street from the pristine beach. The owners rotate managing the resort, and during our stay, Ben was our incredible “head of the house.” Ben ensured every aspect of our experience was seamless, meticulously planning our days, curating our delicious meals, and even providing compassionate care for any minor injuries that arose (and yes, there were a few!). His dedication made us feel truly nurtured and cared for.

A Typical Day in Paradise: Mindfulness and Movement

Our days at Coco Loco were a beautiful blend of peaceful relaxation and profound mindfulness. I’ve always enjoyed yoga, but this retreat elevated my appreciation to an entirely new level. After shedding the initial pull of work responsibilities, I was able to fully surrender to the practice, finding deep presence on my mat. By the week’s end, I felt an incredible sense of strength, both physically and mentally. The peaceful environment provided space to quietly wrestle with emotions and let go of burdens my heart needed to release. It was truly transformative. My Uncle Jeff, alongside Randy, were our phenomenal yoga instructors. Both possess an innate understanding of the body’s anatomy and offer the most intuitive and beneficial adjustments, making each session deeply enriching. We practiced yoga twice daily, with ample opportunity for other activities in between.

Here’s what a typical day looked like:

  • First Breakfast: A light start with freshly brewed coffee and small, energizing bites.
  • Morning Vinyasa Class: A powerful 2-3 hour session, expertly guided, allowing us to connect deeply with our bodies and breath.
  • Second Breakfast: A more substantial and delicious meal to refuel after our practice.
  • Leisure & Pool Time: Plenty of glorious hours spent lounging by the pool, soaking up the sun, and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere.
  • Lunch: A wholesome and flavorful midday meal.
  • Restorative Yoga: A gentle practice designed to relax and rejuvenate the body and mind.
  • Beach Swim: A refreshing dip in the Pacific Ocean, often accompanied by breathtaking sunsets.
  • Cocktails & Dinner: Social hour with delicious drinks, followed by a communal, gourmet dinner under the stars.

Culinary Delights and Adventurous Pursuits

Let me tell you, the food at Coco Loco was absolutely perfect for FFF (Fit Foodie) sensibilities! Every meal was a celebration of health, vibrant flavors, and sheer deliciousness. We savored creative dishes like spiralized pad thai, energy balls, raw brownies, and colorful buddha bowls, just to name a few of my favorites. Freshly squeezed juices were always available, and for those who craved it (like me!), a crisp local beer was also an option. The commitment to wholesome, tasty food truly enhanced the entire wellness experience.

Beyond the mat, I made it a point to participate in as many activities as possible. I wanted to soak up every ounce of Nicaragua’s charm. My adventures included riding the waves while surfing, gracefully navigating the waters on a Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP), experiencing the local culture by watching the Superbowl at a quaint local bar, indulging in two blissful massages, horseback riding along the coast, and even learning the art of chocolate making. And, of course, countless hours were happily spent by the pool, lost in a good book.

The entire yoga retreat was an absolute dream, marred only by some minor stomach issues from accidentally using tap water to brush my teeth (oops!). But without a doubt, the people were the absolute highlight of the trip. Our group consisted of 20 individuals, all connected by TaraNa Yoga. We arrived as strangers, but by the end of the week, we had formed an unbreakable bond, feeling like a true family. It was astonishing to meet so many interesting, loving, talented, and fun-loving souls. The early morning yoga sessions, where we moved in unison, and the laughter-filled poolside chats created memories that I will forever cherish. #peopleofthepool

Granada, Nicaragua: A Colonial Gem Full of Life

As mentioned, six of us carved out three vibrant days prior to the yoga retreat to explore Granada, a city that pulsates with life, color, and undeniable personality. Its colonial streets, a captivating fusion of Central American zest and Spanish elegance, enchanted us from the moment we arrived. Every minute spent wandering its cobblestone alleys and admiring its architectural splendor was pure joy.

Where to Stay: Hotel con Corazon

If your travels lead you to Granada, I cannot recommend Hotel con Corazon enough. It is, quite literally, a “hotel with a heart.” Their inspiring mission goes beyond hospitality: they invest 100% of their profits directly into Granada’s education system, aiming to empower developing communities and build brighter futures. Their ambitious goal is to expand their impactful model to 10 different countries over the next decade. How incredible is that?

Hotel con Corazon is an absolute gem of a boutique hotel. Granada, in my opinion, is a “courtyard city”—beautifully painted buildings line the streets, but through subtle doorways, you catch glimpses of magical, hidden courtyards. Hotel con Corazon perfectly embodies this charm. From the outside, it appears as a simple, elegant structure, but stepping inside reveals the most enchanting courtyard, adorned with lush flowers, inviting hammocks, and a delightful open-air dining area. It’s a serene oasis in the heart of the bustling city.

The pool area was, without a doubt, a favorite spot. Who needs an Olympic-sized pool when you have such a perfectly designed, intimate space? With comfortable lounge chairs, abundant sunshine, and convenient poolside service, it was everything we could have wished for. Our rooms were simple, impeccably clean, and crucially, included air conditioning – a welcome relief from the Nicaraguan heat. I adored the understated elegance of the space, and the staff were consistently lovely, helpful, and genuinely warm, further enhancing our stay.

Unforgettable Experiences: What to Do in Granada

Group of friends in front of a historic church, part of a travel guide to Granada in three days!

To maximize our three days in Granada, we ingeniously planned all our excursions through Hotel con Corazon. Their knowledgeable staff were an absolute joy to work with, curating each outing to perfection. We aimed to experience a little bit of everything this captivating city had to offer:

  • City Walking Tour: On our first day, we embarked on a fascinating walking tour, delving into Granada’s rich history and vibrant present. We explored stunning colonial churches, witnessed the intricate craftsmanship at a local cigar factory, experienced the bustling energy of the local market (a sensory explosion!), and enjoyed picturesque views of Lake Nicaragua.
  • Leather Factory Visit: We had the unique opportunity to visit a local leather factory, marveling at the skill and dedication involved in traditional leatherwork.
  • Masaya Volcano Night Tour: A truly awe-inspiring experience was driving to the summit of Masaya Volcano, one of the region’s few active volcanoes. Witnessing the mesmerizing glow of red-hot lava bubbling within the crater at night was an unforgettable spectacle – raw, primal, and incredibly cool.
  • Mombacho Volcano Hike: Day three brought a challenging yet immensely rewarding hike up Mombacho Volcano. If you’re seeking a physical challenge with incredible natural beauty, I highly recommend it! We tackled the entire 5.5-mile trail, a steep old paved road with no switchbacks, making for a serious workout. Reaching the top, we hiked around an ancient crater through a lush rainforest, where we were thrilled to spot playful monkeys and even a elusive sloth! The breathtaking views and unique wildlife made every step worth it, creating a truly bonding and memorable experience.
  • Relaxing Massages at PUR Yoga: After all our explorations, multiple massages at PUR Yoga were absolutely essential. Their incredibly skilled and well-trained masseuses provided deep relaxation and rejuvenation – oh, so good!

A Culinary Journey: Where to Eat in Granada

Our culinary adventures in Granada were equally delightful. Some of our best meals were enjoyed right at Hotel con Corazon, where our rooms included a delicious breakfast each morning. We could choose between a traditional “Nica Breakfast” – a hearty combination of gallo pinto (rice and beans), eggs, and tortillas or tostones – or a lighter option of fresh fruit and granola. Every morning started perfectly with aromatic coffee and freshly squeezed juice. In the evenings, we often gathered for the hotel’s happy hour specials, savoring a refreshing Toña (a local Nicaraguan beer) alongside tasty munchies, soaking in the charming courtyard ambiance.

A vibrant and healthy plate of food, showcasing the delicious and diverse cuisine available in Nicaragua.

Nicaraguan cuisine is a wonderful fusion of various influences, and we loved venturing out to explore local recommendations:

  • Vigoron at the Local Market: My absolute favorite local dish was Vigoron, which we found at the bustling local market. This delightful mixture of yucca, chicharron (fried pork belly), and cabbage, all wrapped in a banana leaf, was an explosion of authentic flavors.
  • The Pita Pita: Recommended by multiple locals, The Pita Pita is a fantastic Mediterranean fusion restaurant. Their fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned shareable plates were perfect for our group. The baba ganoush was an absolute standout dish!
  • The Garden Cafe: Another highly recommended spot, The Garden Cafe, is a sustainable eatery with a beautiful patio. They offer healthy and delicious food options, making it a wonderful place to relax, read a book, and enjoy a perfectly iced coffee.
  • Miss Dell’s Kitchen: A newer addition to Granada’s culinary scene, Miss Dell’s Kitchen caught our eye as we walked by it daily. We simply had to try it, and we were so glad we did! The ambiance was spot on, and the food was incredibly tasty, offering a modern twist on local flavors.
  • La Hacienda Granada: This quirky establishment boasted a lively and humorous staff. While I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for dinner, it was an absolutely fantastic spot for a pre-dinner cocktail, offering a fun and vibrant atmosphere.

This entire trip to Nicaragua, from the serene beaches of El Viejo Chinandega to the vibrant streets of Granada, was truly an experience of a lifetime. The blend of deep yoga practice, meaningful connections, thrilling adventures, and delicious food made it an unforgettable journey. I can confidently say that I will absolutely be planning another TaraNa Yoga retreat in the future. If you’re looking for a destination that offers both profound relaxation and exciting exploration, Nicaragua should be at the top of your list!
