The Ultimate Instant Pot Chicken Noodle Soup Experience

We might be a little biased, but we firmly believe this Instant Pot Chicken Noodle Soup recipe truly stands out as the best. Its exceptional qualities make it a staple in our kitchen, and we’re confident it will become one in yours too.

Unrivaled Flavor Profile

One of the biggest disappointments with chicken noodle soup can be a bland, uninspired broth. That won’t happen here! This Instant Pot Chicken Noodle Soup boasts a 10/10 flavor rating, thanks to a carefully crafted broth that’s anything but ordinary. We achieve this depth using a harmonious blend of ground and whole dried spices, a touch of fresh lemon for brightness, and a secret ingredient – a hint of hot sauce – that adds an unexpected but delightful zing, elevating the entire dish to new heights. The pressure cooking method also forces the flavors deep into every ingredient, creating an incredibly cohesive and rich taste.

Lightning-Fast Cooking, No Natural Release Needed

Like many home cooks, we’re always on the lookout for recipes that save time. When developing Instant Pot recipes, our goal is to achieve delicious results without the lengthy natural pressure release. Natural release can add significant time to your meal prep, and let’s be honest, who has time for that when hunger strikes? This recipe is specifically designed for a quick pressure release, ensuring your flavorful chicken noodle soup is on the table faster, perfect for weeknight dinners or when you need comfort in a hurry.

A Wholesome Meal You Control

Preparing chicken noodle soup in your Instant Pot gives you complete control over what goes into your family’s meal. You dictate the amount of sodium, select fresh, high-quality ingredients, and customize the perfect ratio of vegetables to chicken to noodles. This control allows you to create a truly healthy and wholesome meal free from unwanted additives and tailored to your dietary preferences, making it an ideal choice for a nutritious family dinner.

Is Instant Pot Chicken Noodle Soup Healthy? Absolutely!

When made from scratch, chicken noodle soup is a powerhouse of nutrition, and our Homemade Instant Pot Chicken Noodle Soup is no exception. It’s loaded with a generous amount of fresh vegetables, allowing you to easily meet your daily intake goals. By making it at home, you can precisely control the sodium content, avoiding the excessive levels often found in store-bought varieties. Furthermore, you eliminate any unwanted additives or preservatives, ensuring a pure, wholesome meal. This soup is rich in lean protein from the chicken, essential vitamins and fiber from the veggies, and complex carbohydrates from the noodles, making it a perfectly balanced and incredibly beneficial dish, especially when you’re feeling under the weather.

Essential Ingredients for Your Flavorful Soup

This Instant Pot Chicken Noodle Soup is a pressure-cooked adaptation of our beloved Slow Cooker Chicken Noodle Soup, sharing many similar, quality ingredients but benefiting from a faster cooking method. Here’s a detailed look at what you’ll need to create this comforting masterpiece:

  • Chicken Breast: Our recipe calls for 1.5 lbs of boneless, skinless chicken breast. This provides lean protein and shreds beautifully into the soup. If you prefer or have on hand, boneless, skinless chicken thighs can be substituted at a 1:1 ratio. Thighs often yield a slightly richer flavor due to their higher fat content, but breast meat keeps the soup lighter.
  • Abundant Fresh Vegetables: What truly sets our chicken noodle soups apart is the generous inclusion of fresh vegetables. This recipe features the classic mirepoix base of carrots, onion, and celery. These humble vegetables form the aromatic foundation of the broth, adding natural sweetness, earthy notes, and a wealth of nutrients. Feel free to add other favorites like chopped bell peppers, corn, or peas towards the end of cooking for extra color and flavor.
  • High-Quality Chicken Broth: The broth is the soul of any soup. We highly recommend using a good quality, classic chicken broth. Avoid reduced-sodium versions unless specifically instructed, as you’ll likely end up adding more salt later, and standard broth provides a more robust base flavor from the start. Look for broths with minimal added ingredients for the purest taste.
  • Aromatic Spices and Herbs: This is where the magic happens! We are firm believers in combining both ground spices and fresh herbs to create a deeply flavorful broth. Don’t skimp on these; they are crucial for achieving that incredible depth of flavor. Ingredients like Italian seasoning, dried minced garlic, onion powder, and fresh thyme work synergistically to build a complex and inviting aroma and taste.
  • The Brightening Touch: Hot Sauce or Vinegar: Just a small amount of hot sauce or vinegar is all it takes to significantly enhance and balance the flavors in your broth. The acidity cuts through richness and brightens the overall profile, making the soup taste more vibrant and well-rounded. It’s truly a secret weapon for elevating your soup.
  • Comforting Egg Noodles: While various noodle types can work in chicken noodle soup, wide egg noodles are our top recommendation for their classic texture and ability to cook perfectly right at the end of the process. They gently steam in the hot broth, absorbing its flavors without becoming overly mushy, especially if managed correctly for leftovers.
  • Zesty Lemon Juice: A squeeze of fresh lemon juice added right before serving is non-negotiable for this recipe, especially if you’re making it as a “sick soup.” The citrus brightens all the flavors, adds a refreshing tang, and contributes to that comforting, revitalizing quality.

The #1 Secret to Unforgettable Chicken Noodle Soup: Acidity!

The secret is out! We’re revealing the single most impactful ingredient that makes this Instant Pot Chicken Noodle Soup truly exceptional. Are you ready for it? It’s HOT SAUCE or VINEGAR!

Specifically, a vinegar-based hot sauce (like Frank’s RedHot) or a simple vinegar such as apple cider vinegar or white vinegar. This acidic component is a game-changer because it expertly balances all the other robust flavors in your soup. Have you ever tasted a soup and felt like it was missing something, even after adjusting salt and garlic? Chances are, it needed a touch of acidity.

The Science Behind the Zing

Acidity acts as a natural flavor enhancer. It cuts through the richness, prevents the soup from tasting flat, and brightens the overall profile, making all the other ingredients pop. It’s similar to how a squeeze of lemon finishes a dish or a vinaigrette balances a salad. If you’re not a fan of spice, simply use apple cider vinegar or white vinegar instead of hot sauce. The effect on flavor balance will be the same, just without the heat.

Swap: If you prefer to avoid any spice, we highly recommend using apple cider vinegar or white vinegar in a 1:1 substitution for the hot sauce.

Step-by-Step Guide: Making Your Instant Pot Chicken Noodle Soup

Making this comforting soup in your Instant Pot is incredibly straightforward. Follow these steps for a perfect bowl every time:

  1. Prep Your Ingredients: Before you begin, take a few minutes to chop all your vegetables, mince your garlic, and measure out your spices. This mise en place will make the cooking process smooth and efficient.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics: Activate the Instant Pot’s “Sauté” function. Once hot, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Add the finely diced onion and ¼ teaspoon of salt, sautéing for 3-5 minutes until the onions become translucent and fragrant. This step is crucial for building a foundational layer of flavor, and it also helps pre-heat the pot, reducing the time it takes to come to pressure.
  3. Combine & Pressure Cook: Next, add the minced garlic, chopped carrots, diced celery, Italian seasoning, dried minced garlic, red pepper flakes (adjust to your heat preference), onion powder, hot sauce (or vinegar), remaining salt, fresh thyme, and 4 cups of chicken broth to the pot. Stir everything well, ensuring the chicken breast is fully submerged in the liquid. Secure the Instant Pot lid, turn the valve to the “Sealing” position, and select “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” on high pressure for 8 minutes. Note that it will take approximately 10 minutes for the Instant Pot to build pressure before the 8-minute countdown begins.
  4. Quick Release & Chicken Shredding: Once the 8-minute cooking cycle is complete, carefully perform a quick release by turning the valve to “Venting.” Be mindful of the hot steam that will forcefully escape. Once the float valve drops, indicating all pressure has been released, carefully remove the lid. Remove the cooked chicken breast from the pot and set it aside.
  5. Noodle Perfection & Final Touches: Add the remaining chicken broth to the Instant Pot and turn the “Sauté” feature back on to bring the soup to a boil. While the soup heats up, use two forks to easily shred the tender chicken breast into bite-sized pieces. Return the shredded chicken to the pot. Once the soup is boiling, turn off the “Sauté” feature, add the egg noodles, and stir to combine. Cover the pot with the lid (no need to seal) and let the noodles cook in the residual heat for 4-6 minutes, or until they are al dente and fully cooked through. Finally, stir in the fresh lemon juice, mix well, and serve immediately.

Elevating Flavor: Tips for a Phenomenal Broth

While our recipe guarantees a delicious broth, there are always ways to further enhance its flavor. Here are some of our favorite tips for taking your chicken noodle soup to the next level:

  • The Power of Citrus: As mentioned, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice at the very end brightens everything. You can even add a tiny bit of lemon zest for an extra aromatic lift.
  • Hot Sauce for Depth: Beyond just heat, a good vinegar-based hot sauce adds a crucial layer of tangy complexity that makes the broth sing. Don’t underestimate its balancing act!
  • Amplify Spices & Herbs: Don’t hesitate to adjust spices to your liking. A bay leaf added during pressure cooking can deepen the savory notes. Fresh parsley or dill stirred in at the end provides vibrant freshness. Consider a pinch of smoked paprika for subtle depth.
  • Double Down on Garlic: When in doubt, more garlic is almost always the answer! Sautéing fresh minced garlic properly at the start ensures its flavor permeates the entire soup.
  • A Touch of Umami: A dash of fish sauce (don’t worry, it won’t make your soup taste like fish!) or a spoonful of miso paste can add a subtle umami depth that makes the broth incredibly savory and satisfying. Add these at the end, after pressure cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chicken Noodle Soup

What kind of onion do you use in chicken noodle soup?

For chicken noodle soup, you have flexibility with onion types. Yellow onion is the most commonly used due to its balanced flavor profile that sweetens as it cooks. However, white onion also works well, offering a slightly sharper initial taste that mellows in the soup. Red onion, while less traditional, can be used if you prefer a bolder flavor, but it might impart a slightly different color to your broth. Ultimately, any common cooking onion will work beautifully in this recipe.

Is it better to cook noodles before adding to soup?

We generally recommend adding your egg noodles directly to the hot soup and letting them cook in the residual heat for convenience. However, if you anticipate having leftovers, it’s a fantastic idea to cook your noodles separately. The primary reason for this is to prevent the noodles from becoming overly soggy and absorbing too much broth when stored. By cooking them separately and adding them to individual bowls of soup just before serving, you ensure perfectly textured noodles every time, especially for subsequent meals. This also allows you to freeze the soup base without the noodles, which is crucial for maintaining texture post-thaw.

Can I use frozen chicken?

Yes, you can absolutely use frozen boneless, skinless chicken breasts in your Instant Pot. There’s no need to thaw them beforehand! Simply place the frozen chicken breasts directly into the Instant Pot with the other ingredients. You might need to add an extra 2-3 minutes to the pressure cooking time to ensure the chicken is cooked through and tender. Always check the internal temperature of the chicken (165°F or 74°C) before shredding.

How can I make this vegetarian?

To transform this into a delicious vegetarian noodle soup, omit the chicken entirely. You can substitute the chicken broth with vegetable broth to keep it fully vegetarian. To add more protein and heartiness, consider adding canned chickpeas, white beans, or sliced mushrooms (sautéed before pressure cooking) into the soup. You can also increase the quantity of vegetables for a more robust vegetarian option.

What if my soup is too salty or bland?

If your soup is too salty, you can dilute it by adding more unsalted chicken broth or water. You can also add a raw, peeled potato to the soup during the last few minutes of cooking, which can absorb some excess salt (remove before serving). If your soup is bland, revisit our “Elevating Flavor” tips. Add more salt (a little at a time!), black pepper, fresh lemon juice, or a dash of hot sauce/vinegar. Fresh herbs like parsley or dill stirred in at the end can also instantly brighten a bland soup.

Storage and Freezing: Enjoying Your Soup Later

Refrigerator Storage

Store your Instant Pot Chicken Noodle Soup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days. For the best texture, especially with the noodles, we highly recommend storing the cooked egg noodles separately from the soup base. This prevents the noodles from absorbing too much liquid and becoming mushy, ensuring they remain perfectly al dente when reheated.

Freezing for Future Comfort

Freezing chicken noodle soup is a fantastic way to prepare meals ahead of time. To freeze, prepare the soup as written in the recipe, but critically, DO NOT add the egg noodles. Noodles, particularly egg noodles, tend to get soggy and lose their desirable texture after being frozen and thawed. Let the soup cool completely to room temperature before freezing. Transfer it into freezer-safe gallon-sized bags, removing as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn, or into sturdy freezer-safe containers. Label with the date. The soup can be frozen for up to 3 months. When ready to enjoy, thaw overnight in the refrigerator, reheat on the stovetop, and then cook fresh egg noodles separately to add to each serving.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, smashed and minced
  • 6 medium carrots, peeled and chopped into half moons (1.5 cups)
  • 4 large celery stalks, diced (1 cup)
  • 8 cups chicken broth, separated
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon dried minced garlic
  • 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or more, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon Franks hot sauce, or white vinegar*
  • 3/4 teaspoons salt, separated (or more, to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme, minced
  • 1.5 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breast
  • 3 cups egg noodles*
  • 1.5 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  • Turn on your Instant Pot’s sauté feature and add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the Instant Pot.
  • When the olive oil is fragrant, add the onion and 1/4 teaspoon salt and sauté over medium/high heat for 3-5 minutes or until the onions become translucent.
  • Next, add the garlic, carrots, celery, Italian seasoning, dried minced garlic, red pepper flakes, onion powder, hot sauce, remaining salt, thyme, and 4 cups of chicken broth to the pot and stir. Then, submerge chicken breast under the broth.
  • Cover the Instant Pot, seal the pot, and cook the soup on manual > high pressure for 8 minutes. It will take around 10 minutes for your Instant Pot to fully pressurize and start counting down from 8.
  • When the timer goes off, quick-release the pressure from the Instant Pot. Then, carefully take the lid off.
  • Remove the chicken breast from the pot and add the rest of the chicken broth to the Instant Pot. Turn the sauté feature back on and bring the soup to a boil.
  • While the soup is coming to a boil, shred the chicken with two forks and add it back into the Instant Pot.
  • Once the soup has come to a boil, turn the Instant Pot off, add the egg noodles to the pot, stir, and place the cover back on.
  • Let the egg noodles sit in the hot broth for 4-6 minutes or until fully cooked to your desired tenderness.
  • Finally, add the fresh lemon juice to the soup and mix thoroughly.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy your homemade Instant Pot Chicken Noodle Soup!

Tips & Notes

  • Egg Noodles: If you are planning to freeze this soup or anticipate a lot of leftovers, we highly recommend cooking the egg noodles completely separately. Store the cooked egg noodles and the soup base in separate containers in the refrigerator to prevent the noodles from becoming soggy. When freezing, only freeze the chicken soup part and NOT the noodles for best results.
  • Hot Sauce: For those who love a bit of heat and tangy depth, use a vinegar-based hot sauce. If you prefer to skip the spice, feel free to use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar as a 1:1 substitute to achieve that crucial flavor balance.
