Our journey began a few weeks ago, as we boarded a direct flight from Minneapolis to Liberia, Costa Rica. As someone who values efficient travel, I’m always willing to pay a little extra for a direct route, having learned my lesson from countless frustrating stopovers. Thankfully, our flights to and from Costa Rica were seamless, setting a positive tone for the entire trip. From the moment we booked, we envisioned an adventure far removed from the typical resort experience. Our plan was to immerse ourselves in the country, exploring its diverse landscapes by car and embracing the local culture by staying in unique Airbnb properties. This approach allowed us to uncover the authentic charm of Costa Rica, focusing our exploration on the captivating western coast – a journey that took us from the arrival point in Liberia, eastward to the volcanic wonders of Arenal and the misty heights of Monteverde, before returning west to the sun-kissed shores and lush hills of Guanacaste.

To keep our mornings simple and cost-effective, we stocked up on breakfast essentials at a local grocery store, enjoying leisurely meals at our Airbnb before setting out for the day’s adventures.
Discovering the Mystical Monteverde Cloud Forest
Our next stop transported us to a completely different, yet equally enchanting, ecosystem: Monteverde, home to the world-renowned Cloud Forest. Imagine stepping into a real-life Jurassic Park, but instead of dinosaurs, you’re surrounded by an incredible array of biodiversity – playful monkeys swinging through the canopy, curious coatis scurrying across trails, and over 400 species of vibrant birds, including the elusive Resplendent Quetzal. The perpetual mist creates an otherworldly atmosphere, with trees draped in moss and epiphytes, forming a living tapestry.
We settled into an Airbnb conveniently located within walking distance of the Forest Reserve entrance (check out our stay here). Despite having only one full day in Monteverde, we made the most of it. Our morning was dedicated to hiking through the mesmerizing Cloud Forest, traversing suspension bridges that offered unparalleled views of the canopy and valleys below, feeling truly immersed in this unique ecological wonder. The cool, damp air and the symphony of jungle sounds were a refreshing change from Arenal.

Each spot contributed to our understanding of the local community and its offerings.
A Note on the Journey from Arenal to Monteverde: For fellow road-trippers, be prepared for an adventure when traveling between Arenal and Monteverde. The roads are notoriously winding, often unpaved, and navigating around the expansive Lake Arenal (there’s no bridge!) adds to the challenge. What appears as a relatively short 72-mile distance took us nearly 3.5 hours. It’s a slow, bumpy ride, but the breathtaking scenery and the reward of reaching the unique Cloud Forest make it a journey well worth undertaking. A 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended for this segment of the trip to ensure comfort and safety on the varied terrain.
Guanacaste: Coastal Beauty and Coffee Farm Paradise
Our final stop in Costa Rica was arguably the most spectacular highlight of the entire trip: an incredible coffee farm nestled in the rolling hills of Guanacaste. Words truly cannot capture the sheer beauty and tranquility of this property. Picture this: a 20-minute drive up a winding, steep dirt road, gradually revealing panoramic vistas. I received countless inquiries on Instagram about this hidden gem, and I’m thrilled to share that this remarkable two-bedroom guest house, comfortably sleeping four, is available for an astounding $88 per night! This incredible value immediately sparked ideas for future group getaways. Imagine renting both the main house and the guest house, accommodating up to 12 people – perfect for an unforgettable family Thanksgiving or Christmas reunion amidst Costa Rica’s natural splendor.
While in Guanacaste, we found ourselves spending most of our time at the property, drawn in by its myriad offerings. The infinity pool, with its endless views, was an irresistible draw, but the estate also featured beautifully maintained hiking trails. Coffee and orange trees lined the backside of the mountain, creating scenic pathways that we incorporated into our daily fitness routine. These trails, often quite steep, provided invigorating workouts with spectacular rewards.
One memorable day, we ventured out of our mountain sanctuary to visit Playa Coyote, the closest beach to the property, approximately a 45-minute drive away. What we discovered was pure, untouched serenity. We were absolutely the only ones on this expansive beach for miles, reveling in its peaceful ambiance and the humid embrace of the coastal air. For lunch, we stumbled upon the only restaurant on the beach, El Barco Restaurante and Bar, owned by a charming German couple. The Tucson effortlessly navigated some of the country’s most rugged terrain, from winding mountain passes to unpaved backroads, and comfortably accommodated all four of us along with our luggage.
Renting a car in Costa Rica allows for spontaneous detours, the discovery of hidden gems, and the ability to travel at your own pace, soaking in every panoramic view. We quickly learned that patience and a sense of adventure are key, especially when encountering unexpected road surfaces or the occasional cattle crossing! It’s worth noting that a 4×4 vehicle, like our Tucson, is highly recommended, particularly if your itinerary includes areas like Monteverde or less-traveled coastal regions, as it provides superior traction and ground clearance for varied conditions.
