Embracing the Solo Adventure: My Unforgettable Destination Wedding Journey to Tulum, Mexico
Just a few weeks ago, I embarked on an adventure I never, in my wildest dreams, imagined I would undertake. It wasn’t about conquering a fear of olives or suddenly acquiring a taste for mushrooms. No, this was far more profound: I attended a destination wedding, completely solo. That’s right, I boarded an airplane by myself, navigated a foreign country, and settled into an all-inclusive resort with no one but me, myself, and I. For someone whose prior experience eating dinner alone was limited to a quick stop at Chipotle, this was a monumental leap outside my comfort zone. It felt like defying a silent societal expectation that often dictates a plus-one is mandatory for such events. Let me tell you, traveling solo to a wedding, especially to a vibrant place like Mexico, is anything but “lame” – it was an incredibly empowering and deeply rewarding experience.

Celebrating Love: Sam and Jake’s Perfect Union
The reason for this incredible solo journey? My dearest best friend from college, Sam, was getting married, and she was, without a doubt, the most radiant bride I have ever laid eyes on. Sam and I first crossed paths during our sophomore year at The University of Minnesota’s design school. It was truly best friends at first sight; from the moment we met, we were inseparable. Although Sam eventually moved back home to Boise after just a year, our bond proved that true friendships transcend distance. When you connect with genuinely good people, you simply don’t let them go.
Sam and her now-husband, Jake, were high school sweethearts who reconnected in college. Their story is a testament to enduring love, and they truly are the most perfect couple. Their connection is palpable, full of laughter, mutual respect, and a shared zest for adventure. We’ve created countless memories together, including embarking on the same epic West Coast road trip more than once, and we’re already excitedly planning more big adventures for this coming summer. Witnessing their union in such a beautiful setting was an absolute privilege, making the solo journey all the more worthwhile.
An Intimate Celebration: Friends, Family, and Mexican Charm
My time in Mexico was nothing short of spectacular! First and foremost, being there to celebrate Sam and Jake was a joy beyond words. Secondly, their families and friends created an atmosphere so warm and welcoming that it felt like an extended family reunion. With an intimate guest list of only 24 people, I was surprised to find I already knew almost everyone, save for a handful of new faces, before even arriving in Mexico. It felt like I could effortlessly blend into Sam’s family; I absolutely adore her parents, brother, and cousin. And her friends? They are some of the funniest, most vibrant people I’ve ever met, making me laugh harder than I have in years. If only we all lived in the same state, our gatherings would be legendary!
The intimate nature of the celebration meant that every conversation was meaningful, every shared meal felt special, and the collective joy was truly contagious. It wasn’t just a wedding; it was a curated experience designed for connection, celebration, and pure enjoyment. The warm weather, of course, was the perfect backdrop for this idyllic gathering, adding to the overall feeling of being in paradise.
The Grand Oasis Tulum: Our Home Away From Home
Our Mexican retreat was at The Grand Oasis Tulum, a beautiful all-inclusive resort nestled just outside the bustling town of Tulum. This resort struck a perfect balance, offering a super family-friendly environment without compromising on elegance or amenities. The pricing was also incredibly reasonable, making it an excellent choice for a destination wedding. I flew into Cancun the Saturday after Thanksgiving and stayed until the following Thursday, totaling five nights and six days – a truly ideal duration for soaking up the sun, celebrating, and exploring. The convenience of an all-inclusive resort, especially when traveling solo, allowed for a seamless and stress-free experience, with everything from meals to entertainment readily available.
In true Sam fashion, she decided she wanted her beachside wedding to be a black-tie affair. When I received that memo, I was secretly thrilled! What better occasion to don a glamorous black-tie gown? The wedding itself was held on a Tuesday, adding another layer of unconventional charm to the festivities. Sam and Jake’s laid-back yet stylish approach truly shone through; it was a beautiful reminder that all you truly need for the most perfect wedding ever are your cherished loved ones and a stunning paradise setting.

Wedding Day Details and Unforgettable Friendships
Sam and Jake chose to keep their bridal party intimate, with only a Maid of Honor and Best Man. Cortney, Sam’s cousin who is practically her sister, graciously served as the MoH (visible in the lower right-hand corner of some photos), and Jando, Jake’s brother, stood by his side as the Best Man. Their presence underscored the tight-knit family bonds central to the couple’s lives.
Throughout the celebration, I spent a wonderful amount of time with Sam and Don, close friends of the couple from back home. Their energy and camaraderie added so much to the trip. Sam, in particular, might just be the funniest person I have ever encountered. Despite her petite stature of 4’10½”, her personality is larger than life, and her quick wit kept everyone in stitches. These shared moments with old and new friends, witnessing the beautiful ceremony against the backdrop of the turquoise sea, truly encapsulated the magic of the trip. It wasn’t just attending a wedding; it was participating in a joyful celebration of love, friendship, and family.
Savoring the Flavors: Delicious Delights in Mexico
One of my pleasant surprises on this trip was how incredibly well I managed to eat. While all-you-can-eat buffets can sometimes lead to culinary chaos, my immense love for Mexican food and its vibrant flavors guided my choices. I focused on enjoying the authentic tastes, favoring dishes rich in protein, fresh guacamole, wholesome beans, and savory rice – a typical, yet utterly delicious, combination. For drinks, I mostly stuck to refreshing mojitos and crisp vodka sodas, finding them perfect for the warm climate and celebratory mood. I was particularly delighted (and almost had a meltdown when I initially couldn’t find it!) to discover that the resort also offered peanut butter, a little comfort item that made my breakfast routines feel a bit more like home.
The culinary journey was an integral part of the experience, allowing me to indulge in the rich gastronomic culture of Mexico while still feeling balanced and energized throughout my stay. From casual buffet dining to special restaurant experiences, every meal was an opportunity to savor new tastes and enjoy the company of wonderful people.

Staying Active: Fitness and Fun in Paradise
Keeping active was also a priority, thanks to Sam’s request that we be workout buddies during our time in Mexico. You certainly don’t have to ask me twice when it comes to fitness, especially with Sam, who first introduced me to the invigorating world of hot yoga back in college. While the resort’s gym, to put it mildly, left much to be desired – it was incredibly tiny and somewhat limited – we were determined to make the most of what we had. As I’ve learned from my travels, all you truly need for a fantastic workout on the go is a reliable tabata timer; it’s pure gold!
Almost every morning, we engaged in a rendition of my Bodyweight Plyo Tabata Workout, adapting it to the available space and equipment. These high-intensity, short-burst routines were perfect for getting our heart rates up and feeling energized for the day ahead. I also attempted a run one day, which proved to be quite the challenge for several reasons: one, I generally dislike running; two, it was confined to a treadmill; and three, the outdoor temperature hovered around a scorching 95 degrees, making the very idea of sustained cardio less than appealing. Despite the gym’s shortcomings, our commitment to fitness, paired with Sam’s motivating spirit, ensured we stayed active and balanced amidst all the relaxation and celebration.
Discovering Tulum Town: A Hippie-Dippie Gem
Beyond our daily 45-minute workouts, hours spent basking in the sun, enjoying delicious food and drinks, and sharing countless laughs with incredible people, we made sure to venture into the charming town of Tulum. And oh, was it ever cute! Tulum was nothing like my preconceived notions. Instead of a bustling city, I found a wonderfully laid-back, “hippie-dippie” haven brimming with adorable boutique hotels and serene yoga retreat centers. The entire vibe was simply captivating – a refreshing sense of ‘not a care in the world’ permeated the air, and I absolutely adored it.
As a delightful alternative to a traditional rehearsal dinner, we all gathered at a local restaurant in Tulum town, and the food was utterly sensational. They even had quinoa on the menu, a pleasant surprise for a health-conscious traveler, and their drinks were absolutely out of this world. Exploring Tulum town offered a perfect contrast to the resort experience, providing a glimpse into the local culture, artisan shops, and a bohemian atmosphere that truly left a lasting impression. It was a highlight that added depth and local flavor to an already incredible trip.

A Gold Star for Stepping Outside the Comfort Zone
In hindsight, I would wholeheartedly award this trip a shining gold star. My heart is full of love and immense satisfaction that I mustered the courage, grew a pair, and embarked on this journey solo. It was a true testament to personal growth and self-discovery. If I could rewind time, I wouldn’t change a single thing about the experience. Every moment, from the initial apprehension to the liberating realization of independent travel, contributed to an unforgettable chapter in my life. It proved that sometimes, the most enriching experiences come when you dare to venture into the unknown, unburdened by expectations or companions.
So, here’s a resounding cheer to stepping outside of my comfort zone and embracing new adventures. And, of course, a heartfelt toast to the wonderful new couple, Sam and Jake, whose beautiful union was the perfect catalyst for this extraordinary solo escapade. May their journey together be as vibrant and joyful as this incredible trip to Tulum.
