Reliving the Fresh Coast Retreat

An Unforgettable Blogger Retreat on Lake Michigan: The #FreshCoastRetreat Experience

If I had to select just one photograph from the myriad captured during the inaugural #FreshCoastRetreat – my very first blogger retreat – to encapsulate the essence of my incredible weekend, it would undoubtedly be this one. It’s a snapshot from a playful engagement-style photo session, with the brilliant Hummusapien as my ‘wifey’ and the creative minds behind Chezus and Show Me the Yummy as our impromptu photographers. Oh, if only I could transport myself back to those sun-drenched days on the Michigan coast.

Fresh Coast Retreat attendees enjoying the beautiful scenery

Having attended several blogging conferences and participated in countless press trips alongside other content creators, I can confidently say that none have rivaled the sheer enjoyment and profound learning experience of the #FreshCoastRetreat in picturesque Muskegon, Michigan. A blogging retreat, by its very nature, offers a distinctly different vibe from larger, more formal blogging conferences such as BlogHer. It’s less about keynote speeches and more about an intimate, weekend-long mastermind meeting, seamlessly blended with an abundance of fun, delicious food, delightful drinks, and uproarious laughter. This format fosters deeper connections and more personalized insights, making it an invaluable investment for any serious blogger looking to elevate their craft and connect with peers on a profound level.

A Lakeside Haven: Our Retreat Home on Lake Michigan

Our home away from home for this unforgettable weekend was Liz’s (The Lemon Bowl) absolutely breathtaking family residence, majestically situated right on the shores of Lake Michigan. From the moment we arrived, I was captivated by the sheer grandeur and charm of the house. It wasn’t just a place to stay; it was an experience in itself – undoubtedly one of the most incredible homes I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting. Its direct access to the serene waters of Lake Michigan created an idyllic backdrop for our discussions, relaxation, and communal meals. Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of the lake, with sweeping views of the water just outside your window – it was truly a slice of paradise.

The house’s spacious layout and numerous amenities made it perfect for our group, providing ample room for both collaborative sessions and quiet moments of reflection. I could easily envision it as the ultimate destination for a multi-family “lakacation” – a portmanteau I’m coining for a vacation spent relaxing by the lake! And the best part? For those dreaming of their own lakeside escape, this magnificent property is available for rent on VRBO! As someone who grew up just across the lake in Milwaukee (MKE), there was a wonderful sense of nostalgia and familiarity being so close to these cherished waters, adding another layer of personal connection to the retreat.

Curated Connections: The Masterminds Behind the Magic

The success of the retreat was largely due to the meticulous planning and thoughtful curation by its phenomenal organizers: Liz, Phi, and Dara. They did an exceptional job assembling an inspiring group of bloggers for this exclusive gathering. What made this even more remarkable was that I hadn’t met a single one of these incredibly talented individuals in person before the #FreshCoastRetreat. We were connected through the digital sphere – social media interactions, comments, and shared passions – but experiencing their energy and insights in real life was truly transformative. Being in a room filled with peers who not only understand but actively excel at the very unique work we do as content creators was profoundly validating and incredibly motivating.

This collective of brilliant minds instantly felt like family, and I urge anyone serious about food blogging or lifestyle content to follow their journeys. Each offers unique perspectives and invaluable content. Make sure to check out these phenomenal blogs right away: Hummusapien, The Lemon Bowl, Andie Mitchell, Sweet Phi, Skinnytaste, Always Order Dessert, Cookin’ Canuck, Chez Us, Amy’s Healthy Baking, Foodie Crush, Show Me the Yummy, and Order in the Kitchen. This diverse group represents some of the best in the industry, and their collective wisdom was truly a gift.

What Defined Our Time: Learning, Laughter, and Life-Long Bonds

The #FreshCoastRetreat was a carefully structured blend of professional development and genuine personal connection. Each day was thoughtfully designed with a packed schedule addressing various topics crucial to blogging and business growth, interspersed with ample opportunities for relaxation and camaraderie.

Masterminding and Professional Growth

Our dedicated sessions focused on advancing our craft and business acumen. Among the most insightful discussions were those centered on leveraging television appearances for brand building, refining photo editing techniques to create more compelling visual stories, and perhaps most crucially, navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of video content. Video, video, video was indeed the hot topic, and we explored strategies for effective video creation, distribution, and monetization. We shared tips on everything from equipment to editing software, understanding algorithms, and creating engaging narratives for platforms like YouTube, Instagram Reels, and TikTok. These discussions weren’t just theoretical; they were practical, actionable insights shared by experts who live and breathe this work every day. The collective knowledge in that room was astounding, offering a wealth of information that would be impossible to find at a typical conference.

Building Genuine Connections and Lasting Friendships

Beyond the professional learning, one of the most cherished aspects of the retreat was the opportunity to truly get to know each blogger on a deeper, more personal level. There wasn’t a single person in the group with whom I didn’t connect, proving the organizers’ knack for selecting not just talented, but genuinely wonderful individuals. A little wine, a comfortable setting by the lake, and stories started flowing effortlessly. These were the moments that solidified friendships and reminded us of the shared humanity behind our online personas. For instance, Liz and I felt like we’d been Snapchat “frands” forever, our digital connection blossoming into a vibrant real-life bond. And my admiration for Hummusapien (who I affectionately call ‘Hummus’ for short, never by her first name) dates back to what feels like an eternity – certainly long before 2002! Meeting icons like Andie Mitchell and Skinnytaste, who feel like veritable celebrities in the food blogging world, was incredibly inspiring. And yes, I have a huge girl crush on Foodie Crush – her work is simply phenomenal. Seriously, I only have the most glowing reviews for every single person who attended; the camaraderie was palpable, and the support was immense.

A Culinary Journey: Eating and Drinking Our Way Through the Retreat

It’s an undeniable truth: food bloggers inherently know how to eat and drink well, and at #FreshCoastRetreat, we absolutely excelled in this department! Our culinary adventures were a highlight. One of the most unique and enjoyable aspects was that many of our meals cooked at the house were prepared using recipes directly from our own blogs. We organized ourselves into teams, turning the kitchen into a lively hub of creativity and collaboration as we cooked for one another. This hands-on experience of trying “real live” recipes from each other’s websites was incredibly special, offering a tangible connection to the content we all create. It allowed us to truly appreciate the flavors, techniques, and artistry behind our peers’ work.

Among the many standout recipes that delighted our palates were Skinnytaste’s Grilled Rosemary Lamb Chops, which were perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection, showcasing elegant simplicity. We also savored Always Order Dessert’s refreshing Ginger Peach Moscow Mules, a delightful cocktail that perfectly captured the spirit of relaxation. The Lemon Bowl’s Cucumber Laban Lebanese Yogurt Sauce provided a cool, tangy accompaniment to several dishes, demonstrating the versatility of global flavors. And for a sweet finish, Amy’s Healthy Baking Apple Pie Oatmeal Cookies offered a comforting, wholesome treat. Beyond our home-cooked feasts, we ventured out into Muskegon for two memorable meals at local restaurants. I was genuinely impressed by the warmth and friendliness of the local community, and equally delighted by the quality and deliciousness of the food we encountered, further enriching our culinary exploration of the region.

Fueling Our Creativity: Generous Sponsors

To keep our energy levels high and our creative juices flowing, we had an unlimited supply of delicious snacks, generously provided by the incredible sponsors of the #FreshCoastRetreat. It’s safe to say I’ve developed a serious addiction to the combination of Sabra hummus and wholesome crackers – a perfect pairing for a quick, satisfying bite. And let’s not forget the delightful synergy of Stonyfield yogurt paired with Bob’s Red Mill granola. This simple yet incredibly tasty duo became my go-to breakfast and afternoon pick-me-up. Honestly, I could happily subsist on hummus, crackers, yogurt, and granola every single day after this experience!

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Sponsors and Team

The magic of the #FreshCoastRetreat would not have been possible without the unwavering support and generosity of our amazing sponsors. Their contributions not only brought us all together but also ensured we were well-fed, comfortable, and thoroughly entertained throughout the entire experience. A colossal thank you goes out to Bob’s Red Mill, Stonyfield, Experience Grand Rapids, and Sabra for making this dream retreat a reality. Your commitment to supporting the blogging community is truly appreciated.

Furthermore, a special note of gratitude is extended to Liz’s incredibly talented photographer, Alejandro Photography, whose keen eye and artistic touch captured every precious moment, emotion, and detail of our weekend. These photographs are not just images; they are treasured memories that will allow us to relive the warmth and inspiration of the Fresh Coast Retreat for years to come.

Reflecting on the #FreshCoastRetreat: More Than Just a Getaway

Looking back, the #FreshCoastRetreat was far more than just a getaway; it was a profound experience that enriched me both personally and professionally. It underscored the immense value of stepping away from the daily grind to connect with peers who share your passion and understand your unique challenges. The blend of structured learning, informal networking, and pure enjoyment in a truly stunning setting created an environment conducive to genuine growth and lasting camaraderie. I left Muskegon feeling reinvigorated, inspired, and armed with new knowledge and a stronger support network. It’s a testament to the power of community and the thoughtful planning of the organizers that such a diverse group of individuals could come together and form such an immediate and impactful bond. This retreat served as a powerful reminder of why we do what we do, and the incredible people who make the blogging world such a vibrant and rewarding place to be.
