My Running Revelation: A Mindset Shift

Embracing the Run: My Journey to Rediscover Joy with ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20

Happy Friday, dear friends! I am absolutely thrilled to be collaborating with my long-time partners at ASICS today, and I’m incredibly grateful they’ve given me this platform to share a deeply personal aspect of my fitness journey: my running story. For years, running was a complicated relationship, a source of both challenge and sometimes even frustration. However, with the recent release of the improved fit ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20, I’ve found a new obsession and, more importantly, a renewed sense of confidence and pure enjoyment on the pavement. As someone who has experienced recurring foot injuries, I cannot overstate the critical importance of investing in well-supported, high-quality running shoes. The right footwear isn’t just about cushioning or comfort; it’s the foundational pillar for injury prevention, enhancing performance, and ultimately allowing you to truly savor every single stride of your run.

My Running Story: From Pure Joy to Performance Pressure

If you’ve followed my journey for any length of time, you’ve likely heard me declare my “hatred for running.” It’s a phrase that has surfaced far too often, almost like a default response when the topic arises. When pressed for a reason, my immediate reply would invariably be, “Because I’m just not good at it.” This self-deprecating sentiment, however, doesn’t tell the whole story. My relationship with running has been a winding path, a journey filled with incredible highs and challenging lows, mirroring many aspects of my personal growth and evolution.

Let’s rewind to the very beginning, to a time before self-imposed pressures and external comparisons took hold. From a young age, I genuinely enjoyed running. It wasn’t about speed or setting records; it was about the simple pleasure of being outdoors, breathing in the fresh air, and feeling my body move with purpose. I was never the fastest, often finding myself at the slower end of the spectrum, content in my pace, but that never diminished my enthusiasm. I wholeheartedly embraced my role as a “jolly distance runner,” cherishing the unique physical and mental challenges that each run presented. High school cross country was a testament to this philosophy. I remember proudly being one of the oldest and slowest females on the JV team. For me, those races weren’t about clinching first place or outperforming my teammates; they were about the invaluable experience of team building, the camaraderie of pushing limits together, and, most importantly, having an absolute blast every single day. The joy was intrinsic, not tied to external validation or performance metrics.

The narrative took a drastic, unforeseen turn around 2010/2011, when I was in my early twenties. This period marked a significant and unhealthy shift in my perspective on fitness and, consequently, my entire approach to running. My relationship with my body and exercise became deeply distorted. Running ceased to be an act of pure joy and transformed into a rigid, almost punitive tool for achieving an unattainable physical ideal. The primary motivation became the misguided belief that intense running would make me “skinny” – a dangerous and unsustainable goal. This era was defined by an relentless pursuit of physical extremes, pushing my mind and body harder than at any other point in my entire life. I vividly recall running five miles in under 36 minutes – a blistering 7:15 minute/mile pace for me at that time – even through challenging conditions like snow. Beyond sheer distance, my routine included 4.5 miles of grueling sprint repeats, three times a week, with virtually no breaks. To put this in perspective, a 7:15 minute/mile pace was incredibly fast and physically demanding for me (my comfortable, joyful pace now is closer to 9:30), and completing 4.5 miles worth of sprints multiple times a week placed an immense and unsustainable strain on my body. The pervasive feeling of pure physical exhaustion was a constant companion, exacerbated by the fact that not only was I severely over-exercising, but I was also failing to adequately fuel my body for such demanding activity. It was a vicious cycle that left me drained, both physically and emotionally.

The contrast between my high school years and my early twenties couldn’t have been starker. I transitioned from running because it made me feel vibrant, strong, and alive to running purely because I believed it would alter my appearance. This mindset, born of insecurity and a relentless, unhealthy need for perfection, was fundamentally unsustainable. It fostered an environment of constant comparison – “me versus me” or “me versus the girl next to me” – where neither ever felt truly “good enough.” This era of competitive self-criticism completely eroded the inherent joy I once found in running, replacing it with a pervasive sense of inadequacy, relentless pressure, and profound unhappiness.

Fortunately, with time, dedicated self-reflection, and intentional effort, I have cultivated a much healthier relationship with my body and a far more balanced perspective on fitness. Today, my motivation for exercise stems solely from a desire to feel strong, energized, and mentally clear, rather than to achieve a specific aesthetic. This profound shift has been truly transformative, allowing me to approach all physical activity, including running, from a place of self-care, intrinsic enjoyment, and profound gratitude for what my body can do.

Why My Mindset About Running Needs to Change: Embracing Imperfection and Joy

As someone who champions the beauty of imperfection and authenticity in all aspects of life, it’s become unequivocally clear that this lingering perfectionist mindset around running must come to an immediate end. It’s time to dismantle the toxic habit of comparing myself to the runner I once was – that intense, driven, and ultimately unhealthy version of myself from college. More importantly, it’s time to completely release the constant comparison to every other runner I encounter. No more feeling a pang of inadequacy or self-consciousness when I’m “sprinting” at 6.8 mph on the treadmill while the person next to me effortlessly cruises at 10.5 mph. No more choosing to row instead of run simply because I fear “losing” or being perceived as slower, even though we aren’t even engaged in a race. These insidious comparisons steal joy, erode self-confidence, and completely undermine the very essence of why I want to run in the first place.

For the upcoming year, I am committed to reintroducing running into my life with renewed vigor, but with a completely revamped philosophy. My overarching goal is to reconnect with the pure, unadulterated joy I found in running before my breakdown in 2010/2011. Back then, running was a cherished opportunity to soak up the fresh air, explore new surroundings, and spend quality time with friends, sharing laughter and conversation with every mile. It was about connection, exploration, and simply being present. So, I’ve declared it: my paramount fitness goal is to embrace running like no one’s watching – because, truly, no one is, I promise! This isn’t about setting an ambitious, intimidating goal like running an ultra-marathon, or even a traditional marathon. My objective is beautifully simple, yet profoundly impactful: to grant myself the absolute freedom to fall deeply in love with running once more, and to savor every single step of that journey. It’s about finding my natural rhythm, listening intuitively to my body’s needs, and celebrating the sheer act of movement itself, free from external pressures or debilitating internal criticism. This renewed perspective transforms running from a potential chore into a precious gift, a mindful practice, and a source of profound well-being.

Discovering Unmatched Comfort and Support: The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 Experience

My history with ASICS runs deep, stretching all the way back to my cross-country days in high school. During those formative years, ASICS was the only brand I wore; it was my unwavering choice. I have incredibly fond memories of visiting our local running shoe store in New Berlin, Wisconsin, where expert staff would meticulously fit me for the perfect pair. Without fail, ASICS always emerged as my preferred choice, a trusted companion for every stride, race, and training session. Stepping into a new pair of ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 shoes felt like a joyous and welcome reunion, instantly reminding me of the profound comfort, reliable support, and exceptional quality I’ve always associated with the brand. This latest iteration of the GEL-Nimbus is truly an outstanding shoe, an absolute standout, especially for those, like me, who prioritize superior support, plush cushioning, and overall foot protection during their runs.

Ever since I broke my foot two years ago, my criteria for running shoes have become incredibly strict and non-negotiable. I simply cannot compromise on excellent support and unwavering comfort, as both are crucial for injury prevention and a pain-free experience. The GEL-Nimbus 20 not only meets these demanding standards but confidently exceeds them in every conceivable aspect. Here’s a closer, more detailed look at what specifically makes this shoe an absolute game-changer for my running:

  • Lightweight yet Exceptionally Cushioned: This is a rare and highly sought-after combination in a running shoe. The GEL-Nimbus 20 manages to feel incredibly light and responsive on your feet, preventing any drag or heaviness, which is crucial during longer runs or high-intensity efforts. Simultaneously, it offers a plush, responsive cushioning that masterfully absorbs impact with every landing, reducing stress on joints and muscles. This perfect balance ensures both optimal speed and unparalleled comfort, significantly reducing fatigue and actively protecting your body.
  • Fluidfit® Technology for a Personalized, Dynamic Fit: The innovative Fluidfit® upper technology is a marvel of engineering, designed to dynamically adapt and stretch to the natural movement and unique shape of your foot. This means the shoe essentially molds to your specific foot contours, providing a truly customized, glove-like fit for virtually every runner. It meticulously eliminates common issues like hot spots, chafing, and uncomfortable pressure points, ensuring maximum comfort and security from the very first mile to the last, regardless of your foot type.
  • Seamless Construction: A Monumental Advantage for Comfort: For anyone prone to blisters, chafing, or general discomfort caused by irritating seams, the seamless construction of the GEL-Nimbus 20 is a monumental advantage. By thoughtfully eliminating traditional stitches and bulky overlays, ASICS has meticulously created an interior that is incredibly smooth and irritation-free. This drastically reduces the potential for friction and irritation, especially during extended wear or in warmer conditions. This seemingly minor detail is, in fact, a huge win in my book, significantly enhancing the overall running experience by preventing common distractions and discomfort.
  • Superior Sweat-Wicking Properties for Optimal Foot Health: If you, like me, suffer from what I affectionately call “sweaty feet syndrome,” you understand just how critically important effective moisture management is in a high-performance running shoe. The advanced materials used in the GEL-Nimbus 20 are expertly engineered to wick away sweat efficiently and quickly, keeping your feet dry, cool, and comfortable throughout your run. This is particularly vital not just in warmer weather to prevent overheating, but also surprisingly important during cold winter runs to prevent cold, damp feet, which can lead to discomfort and compromise overall foot health.
  • True to Size for Hassle-Free Online Shopping: One of the common anxieties associated with purchasing footwear online is the uncertainty of sizing. I can confidently attest that the GEL-Nimbus 20 runs consistently true to size, making the online shopping experience much more reliable and stress-free. This remarkable consistency allows you to order with confidence, knowing you’re highly likely to get a perfect, comfortable fit right out of the box, thereby saving you the potential hassle of returns and exchanges.

These carefully engineered features collectively contribute to a running shoe that not only provides robust support for my injury-prone feet but also actively encourages me to embrace my renewed passion for running with absolute confidence, unparalleled comfort, and boundless joy. It’s more than just a shoe; it’s a dedicated partner in my transformative journey back to truly joyful running.
