Fit Foodie Travels: An Unscripted Journey

An Unforgettable Last-Minute Adventure: Hiking and Exploring Sedona, Arizona’s Red Rock Country

Let me start with a confession: I encountered a rather… rustic moment on the side of a mountain. While perhaps not the typical opening for a travel blog post, it’s undeniably a highlight—or perhaps the lowlight turned memorable climax—of our recent spontaneous escape to Sedona, Arizona. This trip was an embodiment of adventure, proving that the most unexpected journeys often yield the richest stories.

Sedona! It had been lingering on our travel bucket list for ages, a destination we always talked about but never quite pinned down. Then, for Mark’s birthday, we decided to finally do it: book a last-minute flight and embrace the unknown. The thrill of spontaneity was palpable. We debated booking the morning of our flight versus the night before, ultimately opting for the latter to allow for a few hours of planning, especially with a 6 AM departure looming.

Harnessing the Power of Travel Points: Our Southwest Airlines Hack

As a devoted Southwest Airlines enthusiast, I’m always strategizing with their Rapid Rewards program. This particular trip showcased the incredible value of playing the points game, as we managed to cover both our flights without spending a dime! I had accumulated enough points for my round-trip to and from Phoenix, and crucially, I had just earned Southwest’s coveted Companion Pass the previous month. For those unfamiliar, the Companion Pass is a game-changer for travelers: it allows a designated companion (in my case, Mark) to fly for free with me on any Southwest flight, whether I book with cash or points. This perk means I get to enjoy free travel for my companion for the remainder of the current year and all of the following year. It was an absolute lifesaver for making this last-minute birthday getaway financially viable and incredibly exciting. It truly felt like hitting the jackpot!

The primary motivation for this surprise journey was to carve out dedicated quality time together and check off a long-standing item from our bucket list. Sedona proved to be the perfect choice. Its natural beauty offered endless opportunities for our favorite pastime: hiking. Before our departure, I reached out to my online community for recommendations, and their responses were overwhelmingly helpful, providing us with a fantastic curated list of restaurants and hiking trails—exactly what we needed for our brief but impactful trip.

Navigating Last-Minute Accommodations: Our Poco Diablo Resort Experience

When it came to lodging, we decided to try Priceline for a last-minute booking, hoping for a great deal. Our initial experience, however, left a bit to be desired. The app displayed one price, only for it to increase when we proceeded to purchase. Despite this frustrating hiccup, we went ahead and booked a stay at the Poco Diablo Resort. Unfortunately, our first night was less than ideal; we were assigned what felt like the least desirable room in the hotel. A persistent dog barked for about an hour around 9:30 PM, and a boisterous wedding party outside our room kept the celebration going until 2 AM. Given we had a 6 AM hiking alarm and a two-hour time difference from Minneapolis to contend with, sleep was a precious commodity. Thankfully, the hotel staff rectified the situation on our second night by switching our room and upgrading us, which significantly improved our stay and turned our initial disappointment into a much more positive experience.

We touched down in Phoenix at a bright and early 7 AM (local time, even with the time change from Minneapolis) and made our way to Sedona, arriving by 10 AM. This gave us one glorious full day, complemented by two half-days, to immerse ourselves in the beauty of Sedona—exploring, dining, hiking, and simply enjoying the vibrant energy of the region. Our itinerary unfolded beautifully: Day 1 was dedicated to relaxing by the pool, Day 2 was our ambitious major hiking day, and our partial Day 3 featured a more moderate hike before our departure. Let’s dive into the hikes first, as they were the heart of our Sedona adventure!

Conquering Sedona’s Trails: A Hiker’s Paradise

Sedona is renowned globally for its stunning red rock formations, panoramic vistas, and unique energetic vortexes, making it an unparalleled destination for hikers of all levels. The landscape is truly breathtaking, offering a blend of challenging ascents and serene pathways that lead to spectacular views. Proper preparation is key here, especially considering the desert climate and sometimes ambiguous trail markings. Always bring more water than you think you’ll need, wear sturdy hiking boots, and ideally, download offline maps before you head out.

Bear Mountain Trail: A Challenging Ascent with Rewarding Views

Ah, Bear Mountain. This is where my earlier, candid confession about an unexpected “pit stop” took place. The hike began auspiciously, but after three cups of coffee (and despite having already used the facilities before starting!), a sudden rumble in my stomach signaled an impending emergency. Thankfully, Mark, ever the prepared adventurer, had toilet paper. Even more thankfully, we had inadvertently wandered off the main trail, granting me some much-needed privacy for what would have been a rather public predicament otherwise. It was a moment of true wilderness immersion, perhaps more so than I bargained for!

Despite the minor, albeit memorable, gastrointestinal interlude and the confusing trail markings, the Bear Mountain hike was truly magnificent. It’s a challenging 6-mile round trip, aptly rated “hard” by AllTrails, known for its steep inclines and rocky terrain. This isn’t a leisurely stroll; it’s a climb that demands effort and rewards it tenfold. What made it particularly special for us was its relatively low traffic compared to some of Sedona’s more famous trails. This recommendation came from Monique, and we’re so glad we took it. We chatted with some locals at the summit who expressed surprise at seeing tourists on Bear Mountain, highlighting its status as more of a local favorite than a mainstream tourist hike.

Reaching the top was an exhilarating experience, offering expansive, unobstructed views of the entire valley and the sprawling red rock landscape. There’s an incredible sense of accomplishment and awe that comes with gazing down upon the world from such a vantage point. The tranquility and the sheer scale of the scenery were humbling. One crucial lesson we learned was the importance of hydration; our total of 5 liters of water proved just barely enough, especially after an unplanned 30-minute detour while trying to navigate the poorly marked sections of the trail. We’d recommend bringing at least 6 liters per person for this strenuous trek.

Soldier Pass Trail: Natural Wonders and Navigational Challenges

Our second hike led us to Soldier Pass, another trail that, much like Bear Mountain, presented its share of navigational puzzles. While rated as a “moderate” 4.2-mile loop on AllTrails, our journey ultimately stretched to about 5.5-6 miles, primarily due to getting off-track for a good 45 minutes. This detour, while adding to the adventure, brought with it a slight apprehension of stumbling upon a snake – a quintessential desert fear! Despite the momentary anxiety, the beauty of Soldier Pass remained undeniable.

Soldier Pass is renowned for several unique natural attractions that make it a must-see. Hikers can discover the impressive Devil’s Kitchen Sinkhole, a massive collapsed cave, and the Seven Sacred Pools, a series of natural basins carved into the rock that fill with rainwater, creating picturesque reflective surfaces. Further along, there’s also a fascinating natural cave that offers a cool, shaded respite and intriguing rock formations. This hike proved to be an excellent choice for our second day, striking a perfect balance between being engaging and adventurous without being overly strenuous after the rigors of Bear Mountain. It allowed us to enjoy Sedona’s distinctive geology and vibrant desert flora at a comfortable pace, making for a truly enjoyable day adventure.

Sedona’s Culinary Delights: Where to Refuel After Your Adventures

While on vacation, my camera lens tends to focus exclusively on breathtaking landscapes rather than meticulously plated meals. This, coupled with the fact that our main dinners often occurred in the ambient low light of evening, meant I didn’t capture many food photos. However, that doesn’t mean we didn’t indulge! We discovered some fantastic eateries in Sedona that are definitely worth recommending for any traveler looking to satisfy their post-hike hunger. Our culinary journey revealed a clear preference for Mexican cuisine (hello, margaritas and endless chips!) and hearty breakfast options. Here’s a rundown of our favorites:

  • 89 Agave Cantina: A vibrant spot perfect for enjoying delicious margaritas and their truly bottomless chips and salsa. Great for a lively atmosphere and authentic Mexican flavors.
  • Elote Cafe: A true Sedona institution, Elote is celebrated for its inventive take on Mexican and Southwestern cuisine. The entire menu is a delight, but their signature Elote dish (grilled corn with spices) is a must-try. Be prepared for a wait, as it’s incredibly popular!
  • Wildflower Bread Company: An excellent choice for a casual breakfast, lunch, or a quick snack. They offer a fantastic selection of freshly baked breads, sandwiches, salads, and soups – perfect for a lighter meal or packing a picnic.
  • Coffee Pot Restaurant: A classic American diner renowned for its extensive breakfast menu, especially its legendary 101 omelets and fluffy pancakes. It’s a bustling spot, popular with both locals and tourists, ensuring a hearty start to your day.
  • Sedona Pizza Company: If you’re craving comforting Italian fare after a long day of hiking, this is the place. They serve up delicious brick-oven pizzas, fresh pasta, and classic Italian appetizers in a relaxed setting.
  • Javelina Cantina: Another fantastic option for Mexican food and, of course, excellent margaritas. It offers a cozy ambiance and a diverse menu, making it ideal for a relaxed dinner.
  • Oak Creek Brewing Company: For those who appreciate craft beer and hearty pub fare, this local brewery is a great stop. They offer a selection of their own brews paired with tasty BBQ and other casual dishes.

We were slightly surprised by the limited craft beer scene in Sedona, especially given Arizona’s growing reputation for breweries. It seems the vacationing crowd here leans more towards wine, which is good to know for future trips! Nevertheless, the food recommendations from the community were spot-on and ensured we were well-fed throughout our adventures.

Sedona’s Enduring Charm: A Reflection on Our Surprise Getaway

In conclusion, our last-minute, spontaneous trip to Sedona was an absolute triumph. Beyond the specific hikes and delicious meals, the greatest takeaway was the invaluable quality time Mark and I shared, free from the distractions of daily life. Sedona’s downtown area is charming and bustling, and we deeply regret not having more time to explore its many shops and galleries, or to tackle even more of the incredible hiking trails that lie within a mere five-mile radius of the town center. The abundance of natural beauty and adventure truly makes Sedona a unique gem.

This surprise birthday adventure, complete with its unexpected challenges and unforgettable moments—yes, even the mountain confession—solidified Sedona’s place in our hearts. It was a vivid reminder of the joy of embracing spontaneity and the profound connection found when exploring new landscapes together. We departed feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and already planning our return to this captivating red rock paradise. So there you have it: our Sedona adventure in a nutshell, an experience that far exceeded all expectations and left us yearning for more.
