Coastal Cuisine and Wellness: Nantucket with Lorissa’s Kitchen

Nantucket is a destination that truly lives up to its idyllic reputation, a place where quintessential New England charm meets sophisticated island living. Imagine narrow cobblestone streets lined with historic white cedar-shingled homes, vibrant downtown areas bustling with charming mom-and-pop boutiques, and pristine beaches stretching along the Atlantic coastline. The air here buzzes with an undeniable energy, often accentuated by the lively fashion of popped collars and summer chic. My recent visit marked a long-awaited return to the East Coast, an adventure beyond the familiar urban landscapes of Washington D.C. and New York City, and it proved to be a wonderfully refreshing experience.

The opportunity arose through one of my cherished brand partners, Lorissa’s Kitchen. They extended a generous invitation for me and three of my closest blogging companions to attend a truly special event: the Boston Pops on Nantucket. This spectacular fundraiser, sponsored by Lorissa’s Kitchen in collaboration with Real Simple Magazine, is held annually in support of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital. The vision of the event itself was enough to ignite my excitement: an evening filled with gourmet food, including perfectly curated Lorissa’s Kitchen pairings with fine wines and artisanal cheeses, leading into an unforgettable dinner right on the beach. All of this was set to the magnificent soundtrack of the Boston Pops orchestra, culminating with a performance by the legendary Kenny Loggins himself. It was, quite simply, a dream come true.

Before diving into the detailed recap of this incredible journey, I must extend a heartfelt and colossal thank you to Real Simple Magazine and Lorissa’s Kitchen. Your exceptional hospitality transformed this trip into an unforgettable memory. Not only do I genuinely adore your products and what they stand for, but you also made my long-held dream of seeing Kenny Loggins perform live a vibrant reality. It’s experiences like these that truly highlight the magic of partnerships.

Navigating Nantucket: A Journey of Discovery and Delight

Our Nantucket escapade, though swift, was packed with discoveries. I’ll be honest, the journey to the island presented a few classic travel hiccups—a couple of lost bags, unforeseen delays, and some missed connections. Yet, these minor bumps in the road did absolutely nothing to dampen our spirits or diminish the pure joy of our island weekend. The anticipation of exploring Nantucket’s unique allure kept our energy levels high despite the logistical challenges. We settled into an absolutely charming AirBnB, a cozy haven that offered a glimpse into island living. However, our itinerary was so wonderfully packed with immersive experiences and sponsored engagements that we barely spent time indoors, instead relishing every moment spent exploring.

Lorissa’s Kitchen and Real Simple Magazine meticulously curated an itinerary that included several epic dinners and delightful brunches, showcasing the island’s culinary excellence. We even carved out a precious half-day to wander through downtown Nantucket, soaking in its historic ambiance and discovering its hidden gems. A quick, yet important, side note for future Nantucket travelers: be prepared for the humidity! It’s a force to be reckoned with on the island, bringing a distinctive warmth and a constant reminder to stay hydrated.

An Evening of Elegance at Brant Point Grill Bar, White Elephant Hotel

There’s a certain joy that comes with enjoying a chilled glass of rosé, especially on a warm, balmy day, and I was thrilled that this delightful pink wine is experiencing such a well-deserved trend! Our first evening on Nantucket was hosted by Real Simple Magazine at the exquisite Brant Point Grill Bar at The White Elephant Hotel. This iconic luxury hotel perfectly encapsulates Nantucket’s upscale yet laid-back vibe. As expected, my evening began with a crisp, refreshing glass of rosé, setting the perfect tone for the culinary journey ahead. For dinner, I savored a beautifully prepared poached local fish, a delicate and flavorful dish that perfectly captured the essence of coastal dining. The meal concluded with a rich, creamy slice of cheesecake—a perfect indulgence when on vacation, truly embodying the “when in Rome” philosophy. The ambiance, with its elegant nautical theme and views of Nantucket Harbor, made for a truly memorable welcome to the island.

Beachfront Brunch Bliss at Galley Beach

Saturday morning kicked off with an invigorating outdoor workout, pushing our limits in the warm, humid, 90-degree-plus weather. While the initial twenty minutes were certainly a challenge, the promise of a sumptuous brunch at Galley Beach kept us motivated! This renowned restaurant offers an unparalleled dining experience, literally steps from the sand. I was more than ready for a tall iced coffee to cool down and a perfectly cooked omelette to refuel. The ocean breeze through the open dining area and the stunning views provided the ultimate reward after our active start to the day. The menu at Galley Beach is a testament to fresh, local ingredients, transforming simple breakfast staples into gourmet delights.

Taking a moment to appreciate the sheer joy of comfort food—can I just say how much I adore carbs and potatoes? My love for these culinary delights is so profound that I honestly don’t think I could ever commit to a paleo lifestyle! Galley Beach, with its chic yet relaxed decor, was utterly charming. We were seated mere feet from the shimmering turquoise waters, the gentle lapping of waves creating a serene backdrop to our meal. The time spent with the incredible teams from Real Simple and Lorissa’s Kitchen was filled with laughter, engaging conversations, and, of course, absolutely delicious food. It was a perfect blend of professional camaraderie and pure enjoyment, embodying the relaxed luxury that Nantucket is known for.

Indulgent Treats at The Juice Bar: A Nantucket Icon

Following our delightful Saturday brunch, we were granted a glorious four-hour window to freely explore the picturesque streets of Nantucket. One particular establishment consistently came up in recommendations from both our enthusiastic readers and friendly locals alike: The Juice Bar. This charming spot is more than just a juice bar; it’s an iconic Nantucket institution, cleverly combining health-conscious fresh juices with an irresistibly tempting ice cream parlor. For anyone who knows me, ice cream isn’t just a dessert; it’s my ultimate indulgence, and I seize every opportunity to enjoy it. Imagine my delight when I discovered they offered pistachio on the menu – hands down, my all-time favorite flavor! The only challenge, given Nantucket’s notorious humidity, was how quickly my perfectly scooped cone began to melt, literally within 20 seconds. This led to a rather comical moment, resulting in one of those candid, hair-in-face photos that perfectly capture the spontaneous joy (and slight chaos) of travel. It’s a must-visit for any sweet tooth exploring the island.

Refreshing Sips at Slip 14: Waterfront Cocktails

After the blissful indulgence of ice cream, we quickly realized the island’s humidity called for serious rehydration. And by rehydration, I mean both plenty of water (I honestly don’t think I’ve ever consumed so much water in my life!) and a refreshing adult beverage. We made our way towards the harbor to Slip 14, a wonderfully quaint bar and restaurant known for its vibrant atmosphere and excellent drink menu. Nestled by the water, it offered a perfect spot to relax and soak in the nautical charm. Their cocktail menu was indeed impressive, but I gravitated towards a classic mojito, requesting it without simple syrup—a preference that ensures the purest, most refreshing taste. This is truly the only way I enjoy a mojito, allowing the fresh mint and lime to shine through. It was the perfect interlude before preparing for the main event of the evening.

By this point, it was nearly 3 PM, and the intense humidity of Nantucket meant it was time for a quick refresh—literally, my second shower of the day! I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve never experienced such pervasive humidity in my entire life, making every cool shower a welcome reprieve.

The Main Event: Boston Pops on Nantucket – A Night to Remember

The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly the Boston Pops on Nantucket, which was celebrating its milestone 20th year with an exceptionally grand celebration. This magnificent event stands as the largest fundraiser for the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, a vital institution for the island community. Having never attended anything quite like it, I arrived with an open mind and was utterly blown away by the sheer scale and joyful atmosphere. It was essentially a colossal beach party, brought to life by the majestic sounds of the Boston Pops orchestra and an electrifying performance by Kenny Loggins—a truly surreal, dream-like experience!

As guests of Lorissa’s Kitchen, one of the event’s esteemed sponsors, we were granted exclusive access to the VIP tent. This area was a culinary paradise, offering an array of exquisite appetizers and a diverse selection of premium beverages. The small bites were a particular delight, showcasing a fantastic variety of fresh seafood and vibrant flavors that highlighted Nantucket’s gastronomic prowess. Naturally, we spent a considerable amount of time at the Lorissa’s Kitchen booth, where they were expertly showcasing their delicious, high-protein snacks paired perfectly with a selection of fine wines and gourmet cheeses. It was a wonderful opportunity to see how their versatile products integrated seamlessly into an upscale event setting, further solidifying my appreciation for the brand.

The main concert began at 7 PM. Our vantage point was fantastic, seated at one of the approximately twenty VIP round tables, with a vibrant sea of nearly 10,000 attendees enjoying the show behind us. The dinner served was incredibly tasty, featuring both succulent lobster and perfectly cooked steak, offering a taste of classic New England luxury. However, the real magic of the evening unfolded as the Boston Pops filled the air with their enchanting melodies, leading up to the unforgettable performance by my main man, Kenny Loggins. Are you a fan? Davida, one of my blogging besties, and I shared one of those magical moments when we realized we knew every single word to the same song. Both our dads had played “House on Pooh Corner” for us endlessly during our childhoods, and discovering this shared, deeply sentimental memory led to a delightful mini-freakout. The song held such profound meaning for both of us, and thankfully, Kenny Loggins eventually played it! This allowed Vids and me to fully embrace our “real moment,” singing along with every fiber of our being. We may or may not have abandoned our seats and surged forward, right in front of the stage, metaphorically waving lighters in the air. Okay, no actual lighters, but our unabashed fan-girling was absolutely epic. The night culminated in a breathtaking fireworks display, illuminating the ocean with a cascade of brilliant colors. It was an absolutely perfect and truly epic conclusion to an unforgettable evening.

Overall, my experience on Nantucket was overwhelmingly positive. Despite forgetting my preppy polo shirt at home (a subtle nod to the island’s style, perhaps), I found everyone to be incredibly friendly and welcoming. There is an abundance of activities and sights to explore on this charming island, from its rich history to its stunning natural beauty. Until next time, Nan. T. Nantucket.
